The guinea was an old coin with the value of £1.1s.0d (now £1.05). Even after it was discontinued the concept was still kept for certain professional and "posh" things. Lawyers, race horses, paintings etc. Still maintained in the 1000 and 2000 gns horse races.
I'm off on a mercy mission now, and will wave to two of you as I pass (he said cryptically). Back this evening hopefully.
