Pretty much cast in the same mold as the '09 then.

The '09 had underlying tropical / exotic fruit flavours (were they actual ?) that I thought were quite good for versatility......and for easy drinking, a Party, and rather refreshing when extra chilled, but sadly, this cuvee was also delivered with a too hefty dollop of silver spoon.

A very popular style in the UK, and I wonder why this wine has to be mostly sold at £3 off for £5.99 by the bigger retailers and supermarkets ?

Massive bottle variance G ?

Mel did not describe Ned '10 in the Co-op bash to be like the '09 ? Mr B thought '09 was an OK'ish drop - before he discovered more authentic Goldwater and Vavasour.

Dunc, you've lost me. The Ned 2010 is sugared water with a hint of tomato. It's a poor effort. I'm not sure what i'm meant to be looking at. I haven't tried SC Vicar's Choice 2010 at Waitrose but as it stands Goldwater is top sub £10 MSB of 2010 beating Jackson Estate which has a nicer flavour but is a bit lacking in concentrtion.

Agreed, with the addition of VAV'10 in that subframe.

Sulphur on the nose. Tart and zingy taste. Not tremendously exciting.


Because no mention of excessive sweetness is given, I came to the conclusion that Brent Maris has now moved away from his girly '08 and '09 style and made something rather thin, sulphy and tarty. Whilst you're implying that the '10 cuvee is a worse girly version of '09. Tom leaf I spose, is a new feature for the Ned, I didn't find it on last year's vintage - although to be fair, I only had the wine, when it was served for or by other folks.

Therefore......Bottle variance on Ned 10

Not tremendously exciting - the wine doesn't merit any further mention. Sorry to labour it Mr G.

I must try SC's Vicars Choice.

The SC VC was a stunner in 06. My favourite wine in the world then. Thresher didn't stock it after that and I haven't seen it since until Waitrose started selling it. Oddly it's not on Waitrose wineonline but can be bought through Waitrose groceries.

Bob describes the 2010 as rich and heavy and Mel as pithy. Sounds as if it could be a fuller version of the Goldwater.

I agree. I didn't try Vav '10, but of those I did Goldwater came out top.

Trust me when I say Mel's TN for this wine is diplomatic.

At tasting temperature, 10 / 11C, the unexpurgated faults with this NED 2010 wine will teach you a cost saving lesson. Do not buy, even if you want this for a party. If you are advised "Very popular" it means sweet FA for this 2010 vintage.

Top 50 under £6 - Oh yeah !

There's a huge number of nice wines under 6 quid that are suitable for an enjoyable aperitif. An almost impossible task to sort them all out. Duh !

The wine is diabolical, and in this instant, her opinion also.

I cannot believe how bad this was. However, I looked at The Ned's website and both the 2010 and the lovely SC mimic 2011 have equal rs. 3g.

The 10 was sickly sweet to taste.

How odd !

G - this is where I'm coming from: I got very picky, and that was after your take on Marlborough sauvignon blanc wines 8) when I joined Quaffers.

With a large volume producer - does the Residual Sugar vary from one bulk stainless steel tank to another ? Who checks consistency ? When huge markeing budgets are at stake.

Maybe the marketing guy just writes up the web site to suit customers, or the first wine is made this way. As the fruit gathered in at the end of the harvest, and then 2nd grade fruit is bought in, making up the bulk volume required then another guy makes a girly version of the wine, after checking all the meters and guages in the winery. Does Mr Marris personally supervise all of the cuvee's ?

How do you audit this stuff. All I know is that Mel appeared to be diplomatic when doing her TN for the 2010 (Sulphur on the nose. Tart and zingy taste. Not tremendously exciting) Just so, I then bought worse bottles, at about the same time, thinking it's cheap so I'll roll with it. Ending up returning some after a funeral wake - no one could be bothered to open them.

Perhaps Mel and I both sampled wines from a particularly dodgy bulk tank that was over sulphured.

Perhaps one of the workers over-dosed one of the bulk tanks with sulphur preservative, didn't tell anyone, and we got a load of it in the UK.

In my book, the reformed character needs to prove himself.

For MSB in particular, because it is so hyped by the marketing men -

A star is a mighty award for me, I refuse to give them unless the wine is brilliant, or for a cheapo, the wine has to be consistently bloody good.

Like Goldwater 10 or Vavasour '09 or JE '07 or (VMCB '08 for a tenner on offer)
