With the good season lighter red are needed. Tried a couple of Beaujolais from Waitrose last week (2009 was hailed as a great vintage there).
One was Jean Gamet, Cuvée des Vignerons 2009 (which is £5.70, but I bought it on offer a weeks earlier for around £ 4.50).
The other was the Beaujolais Village Hospice de Beaujeu 2009 (currently on offer at £6, normal price being £ 9).

Altogether I was not overly impressed. The Cuvée des Vignerons is simple, honest, dry and sappy. Not much fruit (which is perfectly alright with me), light body, fresh and correct, with that hint of unripe pear that I like in Beaujolais. Nothing to write home about, and yet I have kind of liked it. (It does the work I expect from a cheap Beaujolais). The colour is already turning to brick, so the wine has to be drunk soon.
L'Hospice de Beaujeu is much more fruity (raspeberries, strawberries), a bit richer and has still a brilliant ruby colour and a nice liveliness (almost a hint of carbonic). Liked the texture, but found it too sweer for my taste (you will hear this complaint ad nausem from me!). The following days the fruitiness and sweetness receded and the wine tasted more mature (and of course less lively)--what a surprise, you'll say!
They can both be paired with a broad range of food, but they seemed to work better with rather tasty and rich (fatty) food (bistrot/pub like food).

Still don't know whether I'll buy them again when on special (surely I won't buy the HdB at £9).
