Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin is back on form to my way of thinking.
We enjoyed another one of these corporate gifts on the orange label on Easter Monday before lunch.
This would have been the new release and probably a mix of 100% Pinot noir fruit from the '08 & '07 vintages, not sure. Many qualified tasters have said that it has lost its finesse and "verve" in recent years.
The new NV release is rich in depth of flavour, yet there is a lightness and freshness with length (seems a contradiction in terms) that I really enjoyed - very lovely. If you see this champagne on a Majestic or supermarket offer, and can afford a little more, this new release will not disappoint. A persistent and very fine bubble stream, please do not serve over cool.
I should have tested the trick of marking the base of a glass with a diamond tip drill, to see if i could replicate a single stream to the surface from the centre.
A very good posh lunch starter.
