About 1/5th of Tesco fine wines are on offer. In stores only.

Slightly disappointing. The 2004 was wonderful. Apple and baked biscuit. This is apple and flint.

Slightly sour finish.

Just about worth a tenner as it has oodles of flavour.

The Puligny Montrachet and the oaked Megalith Sancerre are on offer too.

Ugh - Sorry Goose. I'd have thought 05 was superior to 04, as is clearly the case with Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc from the region ? When did you have the 04 ?

I had a 05 cheapo PF from Waitrose very recently, and really liked the mind boggleing pineapple fullness. You want /need an Avante Guarde style to your upmarket Loire's  for satisfaction

That sour finish is wierd* for a ripe SB (* in conflict with ripe fruit) Do you think the wine was slightly corked :?: was the cork saturated all the way thru or had dark mucky cracks in it ? was a fault with the oak, re-cycled from last year's Baron !, how about smoke, any ?, Do you think your palate was dissapointed, cos you thought that you'd saved 8 quid on a treat, but no actual treat was experienced. Was the wine lying in a hot storeroom for 2 years ?

Dunno - too many questions.

BTW - What year was that P. Montrachet ? If you can recall

On offer at £20 although not online.

The PF may have had a touch of sulphur lurking away in the background.

The 2004 I had last year and it was the best PF i've ever had. It was golden and rich with a lovely biscuity finish

Goose - Thanks for coming back on this so quickly.

It is the right year for my taste buds (Full figured and aromatic, yet elegant and an evolving keeper) - good start.

Hmnn - Antonin Rodet - big in Tesco and a big producer, but I don't know his wines. This one needs further investigation this evening, before I nip round and bag a few

You see, Bernard Belicard is a grower and owns a parcel of " Les Folatières"
the terroir of Folatiere produces quality P-M's and is divided up by many of the respected growers.

I wonder why Rodet have used his name for this cuvee. Is this wine assembled by Rodet from lots of bits and pieces from 1er vineyards, and the scruffy bits around the edges of Belicard's land make up the majority of the cuvee ? Did Belicard retire with no sons to take over, and sell to Rodet ?

The Web is wonderful in eliminating a wasted journey. Google Translate helps to get inside the region, and French blogs, and away from promotional stuff.

Must get back to some work - cheers for that.

£20 for a PM 1er Cru sounds very reasonable.

Alas I gotta cut back on spending and at £20 a bottle I can't really go splashing the cash

Can't find anything on the net about the producer or tasting notes

Here is Steph, she writes on a French Forum: The wine she is drinking is 12 years. Belicard's own cuvees must be top notch. The '96 was an angel in heaven vintage for best P-M I believe.

Domaine Bernard Belicard

Puligny-montrachet 1er Cru Perrières, 1996 , 13%, 750 ml

3rd and final bottle.

Le niveau du vin est parfait. The level of wine is perfect.
Le bouchon est imbibé sur 2-3 mm. The plug is soaked for 2-3 mm.

La robe est d'un beau jaune or. The dress is a beautiful yellow gold.
Le nez, d'intensité moyenne, est très beau, tout en finesse. The nose of medium intensity, is very beautiful, full of finesse.
La bouche est superbe. The taste is superb.
Le vin est « à l'équilibre ». The wine is "in balance".
Gras mais tendu. Fat but tight.
L'acidité est rafraichissante et la minéralité est juste comme j'aime. The refreshing acidity and minerality is just as I like.
Le plaisir se prolonge par une finale très longue et absolument exquise. The fun continues with a final very long and absolutely exquisite.

Bref, comme les 2 bouteilles précédentes, ce vin a été parfait. In short, as the 2 previous bottles, this wine was perfect.
Ce qui frappe, c'est « l'équilibre de ce vin ». What is striking is the "balance of this wine."
Je ne sais pas vraiment où le critiquer. I do not really know where the criticism.
Il n'est pas parfait mais « il est juste ». It is not perfect but "it is fair."
Grand, grand plaisir à boire ce vin. Great, great pleasure to drink this wine.
Quand je passerai à Puligny, je passerai sans faute remercier monsieur Belicard pour son bon vin. When I go to Puligny, I will not have to thank Mr. Belicard for its good wine.

I'd say - That Rodet wine is made from Monsier Bernard Belicard's left-over, perhaps "3rd pass" fruit. Belicard has a parcel in the very reputable Perrières as well. His address, tel and fax are close to Carrillon's in the village of Puligny Montrachet. I notice that Steph also adopts the practice of setting aside 3 for laying down. Bernard Belicard's own cuvee is probably the real Mc Coy.

I will buy 3 and take a punt.

*Shezza, ring thru and check, have you ever tried to get any sense from them on the phone !

Of the P-M .......

But that was the Growers cuvee who picks the best fruit for his reputation - we take a risk with Rodet . I'm sure you understand the difference between that and a Rodet Maison assembly.

The last one * I had from my stock, and shared with that great friend who treated me to the 2nd wine of Lafite was:

*Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clos St Jean" 2000, a Blain-Gagnard cuvee. You will be suprised to know that Majestic sold it to me from their dusty bin-ends in the fine wine store in London for only £20 not many years ago ! That contact has gone to BBR in Basingstoke now - sad loss

There is a big step up to 1er in Chassagne. Anybody want to try this basic Lamy-Pilot C-M for me 1st  ?

I just phoned through, there is none of either here. I was patient and asked nicely, another guy phoned back in 15 minutes as promised and was quite helpful.

I just got word from Stratford on Avon as well, there is none there either. Goose, I should make hay whilst the sun shines - If I were you.

C'est la vie.

The wine is now found at the smaller Henley on Thames store, it is the 2006. There is one left now, my dear Misses called on the mobile and said the Chassagne 2004 is sold out.
I said look up higher who knows, and there were 4 bottles she could not reach.

Domaine Bernard Belicard
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru, Les Perrières, 2006, 13%, 750 ml

It is the Bernard Belicard (not Antonin Rodet) and from the vineyard we wanted "Les Perrières". 2006 is earlier drinking, 5 - 7 years in good conditions

Bacchus does smile down :) - Thank you Goose - I'm glad I persisted.

I bought 3x Puligny 2005 - 1x Chassagne 2006 - 4x Ladoucette 2005 PF to age for another 18 months to see how they develop.

And 3 of these for just £9.99. It says £19.00 but they were £9.99 in store.

http://www.tesco.com/wine/product/searc ... x=trimbach.

I will give the Burgundies away as gifts.

You have been making hay. That 2001 Alsace is the business, and will IMHO go on for a while quite nicely.

And a jolly generous bloke as well. How do I get on your Present List ? I think you are wise to take 4 more B.de Ladoucette. The 2005 fruit will go on in the oak. Riper fruit and oak marry very well, and the sulphure / preservative should subside. Good call

I've had a stoke of luck myself - My dear Misses loves The Crossings 2007 now that it has settled down - she got the Tomato Leaf whiff and capsicum on entry as well as the wet granite finish - without prompting. Now I don't have to source an half decent Touraine - which is pretty tricky in the UK these days. I can source 2 more six packs from the shippers - after that there is no more of the '07 in the UK, other than in the shops / online shops.

I may take a ride out to Henley later.
