Your hard drive needs space to move things around, and once it gets overfull then it will grind to a halt. There will be no space even to defrag it.
If your external drive is a virtual and auto extension of the hd then that will help things along. Otherwise you need to go into explorer and dump a load of data files (pics, vids, docs) off the hd onto the external one.
If you really ARE desperate, I could get up there sometime over the w/e and try to alleviate the problem if you like, but shirley there must be someone closer to help.

Son in Birmingham. The problem is with the C drive, which is the boot, systems, programs and installations

D, which has outlook, pictures, music and my data and docs is fine

E internet temp files fine.

Have defragged, but the scary message still comes up. My tech friend came over this week and thought it wasn't a message from my system, but couldn't track it down.

Will go back in and press the "clean up" button, but I did that on Monday. Need to find something I can get rid of, but don't want to go mad.

Did a disk clearup last night on C: and reduced the free space from 14951 to 14952 (put the 0s and points in as appropriate - 15kb total).

The hideous message is up there again this morning.

That is fairly dire Mel. I'm sorry, but 15kb is a nanno amount of space. To give you sum idea how tiny that is, I have 465,000kb free on this maxi. Drives are dirt cheap now, but you need a techy to replace and copy over the whole lot - or a techy to do the Partitions. Does the sys boot up in XP or an older version of windows ?

Mel, you have one hard drive on your computer, right ?

This is my interpretation of your issues based on what you have said:

This hard drive has been partitioned. there is a C:\ partition with the OS on it (the operating sys) and a D:\ drive with the data and picture/music files on it - Is that right Mel ? There are no MS Office programmes on D:\

Your may uninstall some software in your windows C:\ drive to free up space. Old software that is not used. Please dont down load anymore secuirity updates for the moment, otherwise that partition will be over full, and the sys may stop on the restart

If you cant uninstall any old software, an old camera digi conversion, or power point in MS Office or an old version of Adobe, or something superfluous, then you must get someone to increase the partition allocation on C:\

Please let us know, if you know what you have.

I will give you his phone number, and he will fix for you over the phone, he is very skilled at system fixes, and instructions for the challenged - he does it all the time for large firms. I called him 15 minutes ago.

This guy is a helpful soul and builds systems OK, Server hosting and all the rest - he is expecting your call.

Duncan's wonderful friend Simon has led me through the dark and scary innards of my system. We've moved stuff, unchecked boxes and deleted a bit and he's unsure why the message comes up because there's not actually a space crisis.

Will wait and see what happens.

In that case, you probably have a little bug trying to sell you a reg cleaner and lying about your status in order so to do.

Simon is a good friend, although we met when he became a client.
He is a generous guy, and just wanted me to say here, by way of an intro on the forum:

I do think he has a highly intuitive diagnostic skill, because he can see into your system, from talking to you on the phone. - He knows all the system paths, and will take you safely there.

Doing it on the 'phone is an art indeed. You can't just click on a few things and see what happens etc.
I remember the first time that someone spoke to me in French on the 'phone...I just froze, grunted and put the receiver back on the hook.
