What is the best sub £10 Bordeaux red in the shops today.

Majestic/Waitrose excluded As I would have to buy 12 and am out of room.

Suppose I could invite Bacchus over for a game of Poker.

That should clear some space. :roll:

To exclude them as well as Laithaites.

You can buy six at Majestic and mix as well with your SB requirements or mix with a friend.

My favourite House claret at the moment is one from Maj. ....Hmmnn - I've haven't disclosed this to the rabble out there who buy up our recommendations have I ? We go back for more and find it's all gone.
OK - on a multi buy 2 or more, 8 knicker a bottle, distress parcel.

So If drinking straight away - decant for an hour, and serve at room temperature in wide bulbous glasses. Exceptional value, charming flavour, its all in there, mature and ready, but will keep to 2011, shortish but sweet finish

I am just wondering why red Bordeaux is the bees knees of still wine. I thought I would start with the best of the sub £10 stuff and work my way up.

I know that own label claret is going to be junk by comparison but I was sufficently impressed by the humble Sainsbury offering to be curious.

I will put up a list of what the supermarkets have tomorrow.

You might try Bouchard Aine PN (Sains), a Chianti Riserva (black cock), or maybe the Ravenswood Zin (has to be "old vines"). I'm half way through one of these...

Its not. Certainly not sub-£10 high street stuff, its mosty ballast water.

Bordeaux has been living on its name for far too long IMO. Look to the Rhone and Southern French reds (languedoc, roussillon) for QPR.

I was hoping you may respond GK. The best House claret prices are reserved for the residents of France - period.

I have had to suffer a huge amount of angst in recent years to find a charming claret in this price range in the Uk.

2004 Cheap bordeaux blend in our supermarkets was horrid. 2001 cheapo was not very nice as well. Good 2002 PC ones if you looked around hard.

2003 Calvet blends and loads of other petite Petite chateau were quite nice.
2005 Calvet blend and Calvet Medoc blend from Waitrose was nice when ready late 2008, the 2006 in mid 2009 not so good on its own.

In France there are wonderful Cote de Blaye and Bourg, and Graves de Vayres which are lovely for much less that this budget, having tax adjusted by 30%.

The Euro is strong - the pound is pathetic this year.

You have to mature the claret for my enjoyent - people want to buy and drink, people don't drink claret with the right food.

Too Much to say, the comment goes on and on. The UK supermarkets can't be bothered with it these days - which is a pitty. I have no idea what their mark-up is - But judging from old E.Leclerk Foire aux Vins leaflets - you'd be rightly pi**ed off.

IMHO - You cant make Heinz 59 varieties year-in and year-out in Bordeaux.

Chateau Mourlet Graves 2003 - Worth a punt , very safe with regard to drying out (bitter Brett taking over the fruit) and will not be furry at all in the mouth. Should not be lacey yet.

Clos Renon 05 is fine.
I would not endorse '06 without trying 1st, Most of the cheap 2006's I've sampled has had a drying, tannin and tobacco butts (not sweet pipe tobacco) and grounts finish. This nasty end does dissipate over a few years with some => due to evolution of ripe'ish fruit, BUT, with others it gets worse *.

*vaguely bitter, mouldy conckers brett is how I would descride it.
