I've been using IE6 for years with no complaints. Following gg's comments and a few "we will soon stop supporting your browser" messages, I grabbed Firefox 3.5

One weird thing though...in IE if I hover over a smiley, it pops up the name of it, whilst Firefox doesn't.

Hmmn - You are using Windows 2000 pro, so IE 6.0.XXXX for Win2000 is the right browser for an old OS.

Win2000 has stopped giving your security updates, because the OS is no longer properly supported.

You may have made a minor mistake with firefox, they do not supply automatic updates for security vulnerability.

My advice to you is to get the cheap upgrade from Win2000 to Win XP Pro service pack 2. You can set it to run in classic mode. Then to run IE 7.0.XXX. at least you get the patches, and your Java update will work properly as well.

At the moment, you are drinking shiraz with Dover sole. The balanced releases work faster, and the DLL files are tailor made for quick CPU operationing functions. I imagine your computer may shuffle around - only you will know if things are slowly grinding to a halt

Everyone has a different opinion. XP pro SR2 or SR3 has all the permissions you want, business did NOT migrate to Vista. XP is cheap now, and it runs almost everthing you are likely to have in your programmes folder.

For me Firefox works like a dream. IE7 is a nightmare. It's sooooo slow and interactive sites like IGIndex often crash.

Many thanks for all that Dunc. I bought this m/c second-hand 5 yrs ago & it was quite good at the time (1.6Ghz). It had XP on it but I HATED it and so ripped it out and stuck in W2000 pro. Yeah no support for a while now and I think that XP is going the same way shortly. My "spare" is an XP and is wound up and ready to go (just in case) with everything updated about 6 mnths ago. FF (ha) works OK but I can't see in what way it is better than IE (re-ha).

I'm sorry you hated XP. XP home was a dog, but Pro SR2 & 3 are great operating systems, and there are loads of free MS bolt-ons, IE 8.0 is free, tried and tested. Most Schools, Uni's and many businesses are staying with XP Pro until Win7 is properly ready (with the bugs fixed) So support will continue for 3 years, by which time, upgrades to win7 will be cheap, if you have the XP Pro licence.
At least with IE 6.0.xx you receive all the critical OS and security updates. I think you've done superbly to survive with a 1.6ghz P4. You must be very clean and very tidy with your file management - for god's sake don't run Norton security after their 2005 system works, it will blow your mother board out, and or blow the bearing on your hard drive as well.

Good luck with it Ba, avoid making too many changes to every day CONFIG or in the registry with large software installs, or uninstalls, it's asking for trouble.

Not that long ago, I blew a 2.8 gig P4 with 2 gig on the motherboard using Norton 2009 and Outlook 7. Just, too many changes.

If you build your own Ba, I can recommend the AMD triple core processor. The power of 3 x 2.4 P4's, 46 processes running and only 2% CPU usage - quite extraordinary.

I have a norton removal tool from the internet. Used it several times, brilliant free gadget. I'm an AVG man thru and thru (merde did I just type "thru" ?) Oh! it's OK it's basic not yank.
If it aint bust etc. When I have a m/c that hasn't missed a beat for 4+ yrs, I leave well alone. Still have a working 128k Apple 11e and a working BBC Archimedes. Must go, the Chenin and poker are calling me...

'tis the computer that allows of the provision of this website dear Mel, and for the erudite offerings of your minions. Also your 'phone, tv, microwave, car etc. etc., but mainly I wish to whinge at Goose (what again!). Got a horrid bug the other day, my hd was in permanent use and cpu usage hovering around 100%. Took me hours to find and kill it. It was hiding in the Mozilla FF toolbar that I was trying...bah. Fully uninstalled now, second sweep, reg tidy up and defrag. OK now. IE rules OK !!!!

I have a nasty message that keeps popping up saying my memory is nearly exceded and I need to back up. Am backing up daily. I still have 10% free on my C drive, which is the fullest. We don't know what it is whittering on about as it doesn't say. Will post the contents of its silly box, next time it surfaces. Ugh

Right OK - This advise is not going to turn you on

Windows must have space to swap files since win95, you are on XP which builds its own restore files, by packing everything very tightly in a suit case in a hidden part of your HD (hard disk) - right. So you have the open stuff you can see and a copy of that stuff all folded up in the case.
When space is tight, XP cant put any more in that case, because the room you have it in is too cluttered.
You have to shove some of that clutter in the skip - (burn data CDs or move onto USB stick memory) stick memory is dirt cheap now, big Tesco stores sell USB plug in 250 gig memory for 40 quid.

Do you have incremental Back Up, is the 1st Question ? - Incremental means that your stand alone back-up drive (Freecom or similar) is only being modified by changes to files - In other words - You are not overpainting the whole picture, every time you back up ?

Answer this please Mel, and we can move onwards from here.

Certainly does. Win IE version 8, even checks your drive for all known crap and hidden shit as well, and that, is before it installs. It is idiot proof and free from the MS down load centre.

However Ba - I dont know if it will run on a rag top Frog Eyed Sprite

XP and above only. Google and check.

There are also lots of muck that you can't see. Do you have one of the free maintenance progs. If not I recommend Advanced Windows Care from IOBIT. If you are really desperate you could delete some of the many fonts that you never use but dont touch Tahoma (windows uses that). Videos take up acres of space too.
Getting a free-standing storage device (as per Dunc) is probably easiest.
