I have one of those rare weekends where I have nothing planned, no commitments and a list of DIY jobs that can be forgotten for another week.

I do need to get my spring cabbage in on the plot, that’s a job for tomorrow morning. I snipped the base of my runner bean plants last week, will get what’s left of them dug in to help feed next years crop. I might have a fire tomorrow, that should please the neighbours.

I still half a bottle of Chilean Pinot to finish tonight. Other than that, I’m not sure. Will see what tickles my fancy.

Edit- Just got an email from a friend, he wants to pop over tomorrow evening and share this with me-

Splendid.

Not much on either. Returning dog, bleeding radiators, making HUGE stew. Should be quiet as the clodhoppers are off to Derby. BTW Goose, the last time I watched a Cardiff match, Gerry Hitchens was the guy whose legs our half-backs were trying to break, and Cloughie was playing for Middlesboro'.

Yum - 2005 Haut Medoc, a good cru bourgeois petite chateau :) Make sure it's right though - would be 12.5 Euro in E.Leclerc as a coup de coeur

Enjoy.

Blimey Bacchus...that's all before my time. I'm just a wee lad you know.

Quiet weekend for me. Taking the kids to their footie matches, raking/forking lawn and putting down the autumn feed and hopefully getting to watch a bit of Sky Sports.

Hosting on Sunday night. Pinots and Pulignys with some De Ladoucette in reserve as always.

A very posh supper for you the Misses and your friends Goose. Do I detect a Birthday on a Sunday ?

Now, you took a side swipe at hot Viognier - not all of them are 14.5% some of the French ones are 13.5. The Condrieu can be 13% or 13.5% but is rather expensive.

I notice (please, spelling error in many posts) VIOGNIER.

With that Posh supper, you could have a very decent viognier with your cheese board. Soft blue cheeses as well, but roquefort is a bit salty.

We have to find a good affordable one - then I think you may move away from your peach and vodka experience.

You seem to be comparing hot Blossom Hill rose with Bandol or Puyloubier

Recommend a good one for around £12 and i'll try it, Dunc.

Friend's 45th. He's into good Burgundy and stickies and is bringing an aged Sauternes to go with the pud.

He's also bringing the pud as apparantly this wine is wasted on the wrong dessert.

Mrs G was not amused !

Ha ha, I wonder if the Chocolat Roularde will last in the fridge if well wrapped in foil for a day or two ! Yeah as for the faux pas, make damn sure you talk about the cooking as much as you do about the wine - otherwise ...........

Trouble is Goose - You'd only want the Condrieu :)
I say this because although the wine is a perfumed white peach almond and fresh apricot affair, with creamy very light oak, and has superb body, it is nevertheless a delicate medium dry or dryish wine, and is best drunk quite young. Guigal's cheapest is £25 and 13%

Whilst the cheaper viognier is much sweeter, but not to my mind in the style or elegance of a demi sec Vouvray.

I found a Condrieu 2007 for £19 but you need to take 6 - so we shall enjoy it in our minds with fresh asparagus and chicken liver pate with oat cakes.
Enjoy Sunday, your good friend is a generous fellow.

Seriously, if you really want a good one, then £25-£40 is the range. BB&R will do singles within a mixed case or just go to a good wine merchant and see what they have to offer.

So much for a peaceful Saturday. The council decided to close a MAJOR river crossing, and then close the slip road onto the flyover system to which all those diverted would be going. The route now is three sides of a one-way system with multiple lanes and exits. Many were getting lost and doing u-turns and reversing back down the one-way bits. Chaos. Enormous queues radiating out from the south of Bristol for miles. Took me 25 mins to get back from the s/mkt ( about 1 mile). Still Derby did the business. Sorry about the Blues.

Another beating for City but my other sporting love....the Cardiff Blues beat the Scarlets of Llanelli 19-15 so not too bad a sporting day.

My lawn is all set for winter........time to get the bird feeders out again.

I'm into American football these days, but a few of us went to the Arms Park to see JPR and co luckily beat the english. We'd inserted some Brain's into out brains and later couldn't find the car. Nobody had thought to take note of the street name and many of them looked alike. Took ages to find it.

You managed to park in the city ?

Good grief !!

These days if you want to watch a match be it football or rugby in Cardiff you either have to take the train or park 6 miles away and take the park and ride bus.

I like US Football too but there's so many time outs it gets a bit annoying. I usually run out of wine by the second quarter.

I usually have a cold beer on hand though..

Which is nice !

As with baseball, I record it. Watch at leisure and fast-forward times out, half time, ads etc. If it is a really good game, grand prix etc. I then transfer it to dvd and file for future enjoyment. Driving to Cardiff was a gamble b4 the M4. It was a three-lane highway. One lane east, one lane west and the middle one for whoever got there first.
