The girls left this morning for a week with friends in Pembrokeshire, I have the house to myself. I earlier decanted a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino La Capana 03, drinking the first glass now, its sublime, browny-purple, earthy and soft, great depth and complex in the finish.

What food is worthy of such a wine?

Blimey, we're almost talking live. I can't help you. I've just had a glass of Cono Sur 2014 Pinot Noir. Despite it's 14% and impressively gamey flavour for such a young pinot it's thin and watery and not good. Next time I have lovely big fat organic spring onions and mature Welsh chedder in floury soft buns that I walked two miles to get I shall have cider or Chablis.

I'm sorry, I'm about 2 days late . . . . hope you are well? Just thinking allowed - Hope you didn't decant for too long, that lushness could be a tad fragile on this 12 year wine.

Yeah, the standard gourmet dinner is a blue steak for a firm and pretty tannic Brunello. However, your wine is soft and super ripe 2003 a very very warm season and a sweet vintage. I bet that Brunello di Montalcino '03 was truely wonderful. Yum Yum.

Therefore Game birds are the way to go. The pidgeons are a damn nuisance on your allotment - shoot the blighters, casserole and eat them ! If not available, then pheasant, if not available, then the whole cook-in-the bag BBQ sauce roast chicken or roast duck with seared skin from a blowlamp!

Enjoy, actually that sweet and mature sangiovese will go with tons of things - herby pasta, heavy tomato sause, a spag boll, roast mediteranean veggies.

You could do worse than find the Villa Antinori Riserva chianti classico 2011 on the gold label in the classic section of large stores.

The inflated starting price was £19, then clearance mark down to £15, then 25% off, to bring the price down to £11.25. Find others to make the six purchase.
This sangiovese is splashed with a small percentage of merlot and cab, and is nicely oaked. For you, I think it will be ready by 2021. A fuller and deeper and sweeter style than the ordinary VA. Well reviewed and received on cellartracker. Sold out down here, but who knows in your neck of the woods.
