There's talk of Tesco 'culling' their wine list by around 30% with clearance bargains to be found instore. There's no real movement on the WBTC site and I havent been in any stores, cant confirm for sure but it might be worth visiting your local to check.

There is talk . . . . . .
We need to be quick off the mark.

Thanks for the tip-off GK.

Will report back on any 'unusual' store offers.

Today I checked in at a store where high-end wines are sometimes found.
Tesco, Henley-on-Thames. I did not see any unusual mark-downs.

There was a 2006 vintage champagne I hadn't seen anywhere else before, a third off at £19.99 net, a marque I've not recognised in Tesco before.

I tried a local extra store, nothing to get excited about. I think the selection instore is increasingly poor, high volume brands or their Finest wines- which to be fair offer some decent wines but overall variety is lacking.

Went food shopping at a fairly local Tesco Ive not been to in a while yesterday and got a little fortunate despite having no intention of wine shopping at the time
Normally this store doesn't have the best selection compared to stores but it seems to have the better clearance shelves at the moment
I cleared 8 half bottles of 2008 CyT late harvest sauvignon blanc (Otorio) for £4.
Other wines on offer were various vintages of Errazuriz unoaked chardonnay for £4 (rrp £9) I took one of these
There were some other chard and a few rose going for £4 along with some champagne down a fiver and crement de Jura that I may go back to take a look at

Good evening, everyone. Newbie here. Long time browser and finally got through Mel's spam filters to register. I look forward to contributing what and when I can and will introduce myself properly on a more appropriate thread if there is one. Just wanted to say that my local Tesco is full swing in the cull. Pick of the crop at the moment appears to be Taitinger Comtes at half price. "Just" £65 and only the 2005 left. I've bagged a 1989, a 1999 and a 2004. I've tried the 99 and although I'm a cautious spender, I found it excellent value and a serious, complex wine. One for special occasions , of which thankfully for my pocket I don't have many.
Two others which caught my eye on the remainder shelf were Jamie's Red at £7ish, the Cune GR 2007 at 17 and the Finest Piedmont Chardonnay at £11.50. I sort of fancy them but wondered if anyone had any experience with them? Anything else you think I should be looking out for? I look forward to your thoughts.

Welcome to the gang A. Nice to have another member in the group

The clearance offers seem to differ from store to store
Your iffers are pretty top end and while probably a bargain, I'd not be able to justify paying £65 for a bottle in a supermarket (yet would pay that in a restaurant for a wine 3x cheaper! :o)
I picked up CyT late harvest Sauv Blanc for £4 in one of my Tesco's
I've tried a Denbies Woodbury sparking champagne blend for £10 which was pretty good and have some 2007 vintage shampoo for £15
Have heard of other offers in and around 25% off rrp that aren't too bad but nothing special

Thanks Shezza, I must say I took several deep breaths before I went for them but I figured it was now or never if I wanted to try one to see what the fuss is about. I don't regret it but I'll not be making a habit out of it. At Christmas I very much enjoyed the Tesco finest Premier cru NV on offer at £12 plus further discount for 6. It varies between fresh and fruity to mature and biscuity depending on the bottle but that's OK, I like both styles. It's become a payday staple and much better suited to the shape of my pockets! I'll certainly look out for the 2007 at £15. Was it the Tesco own label?

It was Chanoine freres 2007 champagne
Currently available for £19.99 on the TWbtC website (so maybe not a major saving :? )

Chanoine freres champagne 2006.

I can throw some light on this, having seen the wine once more, and marked down in the Henley on Thames store.

The old store stock (more likely 2006) is cheaper than the online offer. I think, in general terms, that the '06 could be a better vintage. But having said that, the wine in store is marketed as full RRP of £29.99 less 50%, so that is why it has been seen for £15.
It is probably a local store offer, and I would now try this, having seen that it is a high proportion PN cuvee, that is aged in Chanoine's own cellars.

BBR rating 2007 (5)
BBR rating 2006 (7)

The '06 Nuits are better than the '07s, as well as for Beaune, so further north it, it generally stands to reason.

The benefits of biding one's time... Have snagged a few of the Chanoine Freres 07 at a suitable discount price. Just need to find a take-off slot for them now.

Also picked up a TF Margaux 08, Cune GR 07, Faustino I 01, (never had any of them before but all recommended by others), some more McW Elizabeth's 05 and Tingleup Rieslings 12 which are long time favs.

To make up the case I took a punt on the TF Marlborough PN '12. It's from Yealands apparently and I was mightily impressed. Medium intense colour, sweet Pinot nose, sweet entry, vegetal mid, good acidity retrained alcohol and clean finish. Nothing OTT and worth the normal price of £10. VGV at 25% off.

You've picked up a nice selection there alci

I had a bottle of the Chanoine freres 07 on Sunday. I really liked it - definately a decent purchase for £15. The ladies seemed to prefer the Prosecco I served afterwards so I guess my other two bottles will be for me to enjoy while they can stick with their Prosseco

I'm also a big fan of the McWilliams MPE semillon. 10yrs old and still as fresh as a daisy. I've got 2 left but will try and get some more before the offer expires (assuming it hasn't already ?)
