Hi all, and hi Mel,

Wonderful site - I hope you make some money out of it somehow Mel, though I don't quite see where! Not an affiliate link in sight, or maybe I've not looked around enough. I'd be glad to click a link or two for when I buy from Majestic, or Oddbins or Tesco.

I just ordered a case of champagnes from Majestic ready for the summer - varying from 33% to 50% off their normal prices, including my favourite NV (Taittinger), my favorite "party gift" (Bolly NV), and some Jacquart vintage and NV.

Pretty good offers - though who ever pays full price for this stuff these days?

I'm also thinking of getting some Tatachilla Foundation Shiraz 2002, McClaren Vale at £9.99 - I've had some Tatachilla wines in the past from Laithwaites and found them to be excellent, and great value. Anyone have any views on this wine?

Looking forward to browsing the site more,

All the best,

Tony

If you love Taittinger, have you tried Nyetimber? I'm very in favour of English sparkling wine. It's not cheap though, but less than Taiitt.

Nice to have you on board. Please tell your friends. Am currently working on the money issue.

Imagine. Its Saturday night, the little one’s tucked up in bed. My wife and I are just settling down to watch a good movie, there’s something decent on slow-cook in the oven, I’m gleefully eyeing the wine rack, grinning like a kid standing in front of the pick-n-mix at Woolys with a bin liner in each hand.

How about some fizz tonight? No chance. I own two bottles of champs and one bottle of cava, they are likely to still be there when pick-n-mix boy is putting his own kids to bed.

I just don’t get fizz! I don’t like it, I don’t want it! What’s the point?
If I want fizzy wine I’ll make a spritzer! (yeah, like that’ll happen…).

[dons hard-hat and dives into bunker/ :P ]

BTW- welcome Tony :)

I know what you mean.

The only champagne that really does it for me is the really expensive stuff - ie vintage stuff, usally at least ten years old. And for that price, you can get truly stunning still wine (probably even two bottles of it).

I did very much enjoy some of the Prosecco I drank in the Veneto tho - lots of VFM there. Cava.... mostly v dull indeed, tho there are one or two excellent ones available in Spain at not much over €10.

" I own two bottles of champs "

If either one is a Krug 1997 i'd be quite happy to offer you two bottles of Jacob's Creek riesling in exchange...it's not very advanced but if you celler them for 300 years they might reward you for your patience.

But I doubt it.

I'll also chuck in a bottle of Sainsbury's TTD Norwegian sauvignon blanc.

Do we have a deal..

Tempting, Norwegian you say? now if it had been Faroe Islands SB we may have had a deal

btw-
Apart from Pinot Noir there are some small plantings of Chardonnay, Riesling and Viognier and some other hybrids are thriving.

For the record, I totally respect other people’s love of the carbonated grape and as Mark points out, there is a world of fizzy stuff out there that may appeal, given the chance.

Afternoon everyone.

Must say I'm not especially passionate about fizz myself, but I do like a glass or two when we have a dinner party, and my wife is almost insistent that we have some as people arrive.

Personally I prefer a muscular red or a flinty white still wine out of preference to Champagne for most other occasions.

That's why I'm always keen to grab a few when the discounts are available, as I'd hate to have to pay £30 for a bottle if we were out of stocks.

Any views on the Tatachilla by the way? Red, robust and still - seems to be part of the criteria for discussion on here!

Tony

I completely agree about sparkling wine being pointless. What on earth is the point? I can enjoy a glass or two and certainly don't dislike it. Taittinger and Nyetimber have a little more taste, in my opinion, but £20-30 to spend on ONE bottle of wine, could be spent so much more sensibly and enjoyably on still wine.

Tatachilla Foundation Shiraz, McLaren Vale 2002 Majestic £14.99
Minty, liquorice smell. Sweet, rich raw blackcurrant taste with a coffee/chocolate finish.
