Really nice to find a very useful site for a change.
I enjoy wine from all over the world and, for my sins, host a number of wine tastings during the year in aid of Charity, so your site will be very useful.
Next tasting involves Italian wines - and I must admit I have yet to come across a Barola that I can really say I enjoyed - apart from one which was homemade from a very expensive kit, which, if I can find a decent commercial will pitch it against the homemade in the tasting.
So, has anyone suggestions as to a decent Barola?

Sorry to have taken so long. I've been having password problems. Have had a couple of great Barolos recently and one alternative.

Oddbins do one for ?13.99 by Soprani. It has a delicate violet smell, and also something like the inside of mahogany drawers. I wrote it was a "fabulous, fabulous smell". The taste is "stunning. delicious, gentle woody - perfect"

Aldi do one for ?8.99, which is also pretty good, but not quite as good as Oddbins'. "Lovely perfumed oak. Teeth coating tannins (to be expected) smooth, almost smelling of American oak (unlikely!) and with nice acidity"


M & S do an alternative, which is Renato Ratti Nebbiolo - so same grape, same region, wrong piece of soil. It's ?9.99 and has a smell of "sweet violet with smooth, gentle mouth feel. Good price".

Mel, the Barolo la Mora at Majestic is now down to a tenner if you buy two. I notice that it came bottom of your Barolo testings. Any idea as to the QPR ratio now it's 33% cheaper.

The tasting was over a year ago, and the scores were pretty close. We tasted the 99 vintage and Maj are now offering 2000/01, so it's a different wine. Normally, I'd say buy a bottle and taste before risking a large order, but of course you need to buy a case with Maj, so that's not a viable option.

We didn't have any bad wines that night, and a tenner is a good price for Barolo. Do you have an Aldi near you because their Barolo isn't bad and only costs ?8.99, standard price.

But you don't have to buy a case of one thing! Anyway, plumped for two bottles but Italian night was cancelled so I haven't tasted yet. Thanks for your comments, No Aldi near me I'm afraid.
