It looks like most retailers are protecting us from the VAT rate rise at present. It could be a good time to replenish stocks after the christmas period. That is unless you have any new year resolutions to cut back or like me you have too much already. Anyone have any wine related NYR's?

I aim to reduce the number of bottles I have so will need to make sure I am drinking more than I am buying. :D

Tribs,

Only to drink good/excellent wine more offen with friends or at offliners.

To visit another wine region in 2011 after my Bordeaux trip last summer i nowe have the bug.
I fancy the Mosel or Southern Rhone.

Have decided to get into Argentina wines in more depth this year too !!

Thats it for me, the cellar should stay around the 350/400 bottle mark so buying in 2011 will stay the same prehaps increase a little due to experimenting with Argentina hopefully.

Regards
Richard

I think we should be more concerned with inflation overall, prices in the shops are only going one way, up. I intend to drink my stock and only buy when it’s an absolute steal.

I’m seriously considering making more of my own wine for everyday drinking, let’s see how much tax HMRC get out of that! The tax and debt burden is killing this country.

Yet again my NYR is to stop being so nice to everybody, particularly bridge players and checkout staff. I always break it though.

It's not only VAT:

It's not good, when the hit comes, it will be more than 2.5% for the VAT element. General & National Retailers are already talking 8% to cover establishment and logistic costs borne and suffered this last quarter, and overly generous Xmas marketing to generate traffic.

To capture the £6.99 £8.99 £11.99 the price postions:

We may see a reduction in quality as retailers try and maintain a bench mark for perceived price, and price to quality positioning. This all bodes rather badly for lovers of french wines - for the rest of the world - the labels and bottles may get fancier - what's inside though, counts for everything.

Moving up the scale a bit, to smaller producers and finer wines:

Lets hope I'm wrong - howver the last upscale Burgundy deals I bought were in January 2009 before the wholesale hike. Other odd bits and left-over burgundy stuff bought, has been clearance and in store changes to stocking policy

I hope I'm wrong.

W'ell have to harness GK for the promo's

Cracking result today. I hate soccer but would not like to see historic Wolves in D2. Maybe they will play Cardiff one way or another next year. The plot thickens. Bristol R into D4..wheee. Bristol C failed to get relegated...bah
