My local Sainsburys has recently been expanded into the largest store in the country... from first looks though it hasn't meant it has the largest and most diverse wine selection

I've recently found Sainsbury's selection of wines in general to be fairly unimaginative and unexciting
They've just rejigged it at the store mind you, so will have a look to see whether anything has improved..

Indeed, my closest one has gone down hill a lot. Queues, noise, prices missing, etc.etc. They owe me a credit of £30 odd from 12 days ago and it still hasn't reached my bank a/c.

Sainsbury, when I first got into wine were serious competition for the likes of Waitrose, Marks, Majestic and Oddbins but now seem to have ditched most of their range and replaced them with junk wines dressed up as fine wine and a garbage Taste the Difference range.

The idea seems to be to take advantage of wine's increasing trendyness by selling tat to the masses of clueless wine drinkers who haven't as yet learnt enough to know that they are being ripped off.

Oddbins went down this road and nearly went bankrupt.

Although Oddbins have drastically improved their range their single bottle prices are way too high and they only discount if you buy 12. I cannot see Oddbins surviving.

sainsburys have the fact that the shoppers are already purchasing goods on their premises so will also buy the wine.

As we know, the average shopper will tend to pick up a bottle or 3 of Echo falls, E&J, JC etc or anything that is "on offer"/containing the words pinot grigio
So like you say, sainsburys will continue to profit from selling the mass produced tut.

In me however, they have lost a customer for wine except for the extremely odd occasion if I happen across a store with a fine wine section

I've often wondered if anybody does actually buy the Blossom Hill, Jacob's Creek, etc at their full rrp of £8 - £9 before they are mysteriously reduced to half price. I guess that they must have to offer them at that price somewhere, although maybe only in a limited number of stores.

I guess wine is like any other commodity in supermarket terms. Do whatever you can to persuade the consumer that they're getting a bargain.

IIRC, wine has to be on at "full price" for something like 28 days in a year (citation needed) for them to be then put in offer for the test of the year
