Quite right. I too have long had grave misgivings of the general attitude towards the 3MH thiols.

I think we all agree that anything that prolongues the life of thiols associated with youth is good on an MSB. Probably a few other wines as well, but I can't quite bring one to mind. Gamay? Garganega and Trebbiano?

our burgundy loving friends have one.

Looks like a white fridge, a bit warmer, lower running costs, same size, work top height, and all racked out and cheaper !

However, here is a coolzone without the freezer box, adjust your thermostat from to 5 to 8 degrees C, deep enough and loads of shelving. will last for years as not doing any freezing work. Cost is £105.
Line the shelves with that cheap non slip rubber matting, that you cut up with scissors.

You dont have to have the designer fancy pants wine cooler for silly money, because it is in a very fancy cabinet decked out with stainless steel pillars, and capable of withstanding a hand grenade ? Shove this cheapo in your garage or even in the shed if short of utility space !

I bought six Saint Clair basic. Four went straight in the fridge and two in the garage and kept there for about a week. ( March...it was cool )

The four were perfect. The two tasteless. ( I did chill them before opening )

I bought four more and put three in the fridge and kept one out just to see if the same would happen and it did.

In fact the one kept out was unpleasant.

I blamed GK....

I've been pondering wine storage possibilities in the new house. There is no under stairs storage, so I'm looking at something in the garage. I was thinking of either an ikea shelf cabinet or a number of kitchen wall cabinets. One of those fridges for the whites might be a good idea as can save some space for beers too. Any advice welcome.

What is the roof on the garage? Is it sufficient to limit major changes in temp?

Large swings in ambient temperature is the killer for wine, cool one day, hot the next, and so on.

Garages vary, some are integrated- essentially another room to the house with bad decor. But others are external and don’t benefit from a consistently low temp range.

Im lucky, I have a larder, dead centre of the house, no windows, one door, dark and cool with lots of racking- much to my wife's annoyance.

The garage is detatched with a pitched roof. The ceiling is flat, so there is a separate roof space. It should provide some insulation. This is why I was going to use cabinets / fridge.

Stick a thermometer in there, take a reading on a cool dull day, take another reading on a hot sunny day- anything over 20degC is a deffo no-no (Im sure you knew that already).

An external garage can be as bad as your loft for temp fluctuation.

I dont think the cabinets will help, other than look nice. If the room is too warm the cabinets will be warm too.

Tribs, you have a dilemna there, garages always get warm in the Summer, doors facing the sun at the front, single brick external walls. Roof insulation to do, Door insulation to fix somehow, the list goes on.....

However, I've done a bit of searching, and this could get you out of a mess for 60 whites or so, if you double up here and there on the shelves. Looks good too.

Frigidaire wine-cooler

Good capacity. If I was up there, I'd look at this as part of your solution.

Alternatively, you could dig under your garage, sink a wine cellar, have the access hatch in the garage. It doesnt have to be huge.

Talk to a builder, there are plenty looking for work at the mo.

Not around here: they have too much work. The 2 weeks promised for completion of our kitchen has stretched over 4 weeks as tilers/plasterers etc are unavailable
