Sileni pinot noir, central Otago 2007

1) Does Sileni actually own/control a single vineyard in CO (Bendigo)
2) Is the starting price a load of bo***ocks
3) Have you heard any reports on Sileni PN in CO
4) Do you know anyone who has bought this from a previous vintage ?
5) Has Grant Edmonds made other reputable PN ?

Again, due to marketing demands, Sileni has ended up producing Pinot Noir as part of its portfolio. Begrudgingly and luckily, Grant Edmonds has the services of Pinot Noir ‘geeks’ in his winemaking team with a real passion for the variety! The Sileni ‘Grand Central’ Central Otago Pinot Noir 2007 (17.0/20) 14% alc, was sourced from Central Otago fruit from different soil profiles and the wine aged 10 months in barriques. The Pinot Noir vineyard in Hawke’s Bay had been affected by the frost reducing the crop which resulted in Sileni looking outside of the Hawke’s Bay region for alternatives to meet their market demands. The wine had an attractive red/black cherry aroma with thyme and a slight carbonic maceration nose. Grant surmises this could have been caused by the picking of the fruit at 2 am in the morning and then being trucked up to Marlborough for processing. This Pinot Noir and the following Hawke’s Bay Pinot Noir were otherwise treated identically. The colour of Central Otago wine was deeper and the wine had a vibrancy to its red fruit expression. The Sileni ‘The Plateau’ Hawke’s Bay Pinot Noir 2007 (18.0/20), 14.0% alc was also aged 10 months in barriques. It was fragrant and floral, with black cherry and red liquorice aromas. A lot of work there. More info than I found, and I was looking at Winegeeks the other day, and particularly pinot noir. I couldn't go backwards from the Amisfield PN I suppose.

The Kosta Browne PN Sonoma, 19.5, caught my eye, the price tho.......

I should access the wine - or should I. Is the 17/20 a view based on across the board New world or Global and in respect of proper Burgundy styles ?

So I trust him more. 89/88 points = 17.7

28 or 29 Nz dollars - £12.65 - £13.30 depending on which currency converter - excluding buying margin and commission.

It seems that the reason for the discount might be down to the line being discontinued.

Think I'm gonna try and pick up a case altho don't want to comit to 12 and you have to place an order for 12 at tesco so I'm a bit stuck.
would have bought the Lindauer rose on offer at 3.40 to make up the other 6 if it hadn't sold out

Shezz, if you're going with this....... What else are you taking to make-up the obligatory dozen ?

I'm still contemplating - the NZ offer last February on that tasting session was $23 NZD approx £10.50 before import duty and devaluation of sterling.

Still mulling it - I would take the 6, but to pick 6 more has to entertain me.

This is my problem.

would rather not pick up 12 bottles full stop.
Trying to cut back on buying at the moment as I should be blowing my money on other things

I really don't know what to go for on the remaining 6 bottles.
Would almost be a case of buying just for the sake of it.

Might have to give this a swerve unless I can locate it on a shelf somewhere (or is this an internet only offer)
Almost seems worth the drive to the nearest megastore which is a good 25 mile journey (but only a 35min drive)

Might have a word with a friend to see if they fancy splitting a case or a mixed case with 6 or 8 bottles of these in

My stocks are quite high - Yet I have CO pinot as the very 1st call on my radar for Twenty ten.

You'll have to come down the River - mind you, you'll have to do a load of locks

I still think it's a reasonable deal tho, cos the NZ clearance offer was in NZ. However Sileni decided to put it on the boat.

However we view the real worth of a wine in the country of origin - we have to factor-in that bloody UK import tax

Bottom line you're gonna be hard pushed to find a CO PN for a tenner

It does seem to get reasonable write ups so is definately worth the money.

For £60 I'd be all over 6 but can't really push the boat out to buy 12 for £120 right now

I even went as far to see how far you're from mine with the thought that I'd go halves with you and if I ever pass by your neck of the woods could stop off to pick up 6 (I feel I can trust you well enough not to peel off the labels and stick them on bottles of Cono Sur

havee resorted to asking my brother too but think this unlikely as he's about to get his flat refurbed which is gonna drain a chunk of his finances

You know, you lot would be lost without me.

Shezz, the Lindauer basic rose is dreadful. Unless you've had it before and know for sure that you like it i'd leave it even at £3.40.

It's very fizzy and painfully dry with no fruit.
