Cheap wine 'beats pricier bottles' in blind taste test.



This got me thinking..... I’ve often believed there is an element of circumstance involved with choosing and enjoying wine. Regardless of what you think you know, or what you believe, enjoying a particular bottle of wine is mostly influenced by the 'here & now', how you are feeling, your state of mind at that moment, what minerals your body is craving on that day, what you had for breakfast, the weather, what shoes you have on.

I’m beginning to think that these factors are much more important than vintage or producer.*

Is the wine industry one great big confidence trick?

These tests are rarely all that they seem. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Champagne test didn't go something like this.

1- Spend time finding the very best sub £30 Champagne. Probably Waitrose gold medal winning Blanc de Blancs.

2- Wait for the above wine to go on offer and then claim it to be a typical example of a cheap £17.99 Champagne.

3- Spend time finding the worst example of a £30 Champagne ever sold in the UK. Probably one of those fake ' bargain offers ' at Sainsbury or the Co-Op.

4- Claim the above to be a typical example of a £30 Champagne.

5- Ensure that few ,if any, who actually like Champagne are allowed to take the test and could therefore identify the cheap wine as a ringer or the expensive wine as a dud.

6- When the result goes your way sell your story to a media for whom any cheap shot dig at the wine industry will be deemed credible and newsworthy.

7- Wait two years and repeat test.

Not like me to stick up for the wine industry I know but this test is highly manipulated garbage.

I agree with that - almost every word. For some of us, there is a particular flavour that we are seeking, from a particular wine, from a particular region.

The formulaic style may not be the one that we want on that occasion.

As for those d*ck heads who were asked to choose between a quality 30 quid claret and one for a fiver, and didn't know, they deserve to be subjected to Blossom Hill, and Tesco value tomatoe ketchup on T. value cut bread for the next three months....T. value margarine is optional.

It's all bull poopie, cos we don't know which wines were chosen to distort and then mess up the comparatives.
