My local Indian restaurant has a bring-your-own policy, two whites from last night...

Sileni Sauvignon Blanc ’06, Thresher (around £9, part of a selection bought recently with the 40% discount voucher).
Sweet Marlborough fruit, clean tasting with the slightest spritz. Sharp, lemony, a touch too sweet, some depth but struggled with the spice, it intensified the alcohol.
Curry-o-plonk rating: 4/10

Lindemans Bin 75 Riesling ’06, Tesco £6.99 (now on offer for £4.99)
Almost off-dry with good, fresh acidity. Ripe, plenty of grip. Apple and tinned peach flavours. Worked well with the creamy sauces, stood firm.
Curry-o-plonk rating: 8/10

Do you know, Aus Riesling ticks so many food boxes. It's fabulous with Chinese as well. The old idea that you need something sweet like GWT for Asian food is nonsense.

Something lovely happens between the savoury, green flavours, the acidity and the herbs and spices. Coriander is particularly delicious with Riesling.

Am running a tasting of it 22 July. Such a long, long way away, but I have some fab samples in the cupboard already.

I'm also going to a tasting tonight at our local wine society, run by Top Selection of Rieslings from around the world. Will post the results.

Whites from the Languedoc-Roussillion region is another style I have had success with when coupled with spicy food, look for blends with a healthy quantity of Marsanne and Grenache Blanc.

Three wines drank during home-cooked curry night at the holiday cottage last week.-

Boschendal 1685 Grand Cuvee Sauvignon Blanc 07, St Africa
My favourite wine of the evening but not the best suited to the range of spices. Mellow and full, dry, some nice herb notes, lovely balance with just enough New World SB fruit intensity without going ‘NZ’ overboard. Has a splash of Semillon in there too. Went well with a selection of mild starters.
Curry-o-plonk rating: 6/10

Tesco Finest Tingleup Riesling ‘06
Dry with a slight waxy finish. Some lime fruit and enough acidity to balance but lacking concentration. A bit dull but worked quite well with the tomato and chilli salad.
Curry-o-plonk rating: 4/10

Tesco Finest Alsace Riesling ‘06
Lovely floral lift, pear fruit, quite full and ripe, nice finish. Pretty good with the cream sauce options. Not easily identifiable as Riesling but a pleasant enough drop with bags more character that the Tingleup.
Curry-o-plonk rating: 7/10

Last night we had Thai Green Curry with Pork, not overly spicy but warm enough with the extra chilli thrown in.

Tesco Finest Steillage Riesling '07.
I don’t think this would stand up to the really hot stuff but the sweetness complimented the mild creamy sauce and the savoury rice. This wine keeps growing on me. Refreshingly aromatic, there is a earthy-roughness to this wine that marches straight down the tongue, sweeping it clear and depositing a fruit salad twist. No need for desert.

Riverside Cottage of course.

Thanks for doing this GK. I always endure some angst in trying to choose something that will be enjoyable, yet correct.

When my eldest daughter wanted best take away on an impromtu Birthday nosh round here. I got out well chilled M&S Oudinot demi sec champers, cos my family like fiz for a celeb, and (I thought) it was an inspired choice.

NO complaints at all - Everyone smiley.

Her hubby finished off with Peroni.

And I went to fireside claret with very mature mouse trap (after scapping off the green stuff round the edges) My youngest daughter helped me finish off the fireside H.Medoc - typical.

You have this  to look forward to GK - Like father like all your kids.
