This is my problem too and the only 1 curse of this site!
I'm always thinking that there's a must have bargain that if I miss out i'll end up living to regret

The thing is there regularly seems to be a new great wine or must have vintage highlighted on here so I'm now not gonna pressure myself to buy everytime I come across a great wine ion here coz there should be another just down the road

at the same time, you discovered what in your eyes is a gem and so its probably worth picking up more.
The one thing we know from being on this site is that the same offer will come about possibley after xmas in Jan some time and definately next year

Ah, but VAT and then Duty. Prices will start to creep up even when on offer.

Buy now GK. Its not like it'll not last.

Jonathan Ray's write up agrees with what you've said GK

Probably is worth picking up a few more

What a splendid chap that Mr Ray is :)

What makes it double tempting is the fact that I have £40 worth of Sainsburys vouchers, got them recently when I switched my home buildings and contents insurance, plus Im on double nectar points.

Its a done deal really. isnt it? :?

Mrs GK has put those vouchers aside for the Xmas week shop, now to get them without her noticing....... 8)

I'm looking forward to giving port a bit of a try this xmas.
Never really got into it properly so interested to see how I find it

GK, are you a member on theportforum.com? came across it yesterday while looking into crusted port for this thread

Yes, have been for a few years but I mainly use it for research, TN's etc. (I referred to the site on page one of this thread, TPF)

The guys over there are serious collectors, most of the stuff they drink is out of my league but they do offer frank and accurate views on the high street ports that I find useful.

I've been taking a look this morning and like you said they are pretty knowledgeable.
useful TNs that I'll refer to should I get on well with port.

I've got a 2001 Dow's LBV that I randomly purchased last year and the Graham's crusted to give a go
the Dow's doesn't seem to get much price on the the port forum but the tns were 3yrs ago and cellar tracker has some decent scores for it

My "go to" port is the Dow Trademark Finest Reserve. It's usually £12 but is occasionally on offer half price at Sainsburys. It's picked up plenty of Gold medals over the years.

I can confirm that although GK may be guilty of over-hyping it a little this crusted port is a step up. It's a bit more tannic and wine like than what I'm used to but that is not a bad thing as it balances the sweetness. Lots of complexity and deep dark aromas and flavours. Great to warm the cockles with this weather we are experiencing at the moment. I will enjoy drinking these over the winter period.

Cheers GK

Did you drink it from the bottle Tribs?

Let it breath, decant.

I like the Trademark too, I have recco'd it here in the past.

I did last night 'cos I was pushed for time. But I had a sneaky little drop after lunch which I let breathe a while. Was certainly much better for it. We will see how it develops over the next few days.

When its reduced half price the Trademark is a bloomin bargain but this at £9.50 is too.

Graham's Crusted Port '02 was not found in the huge mega store Sainsbury's in west Reading. My dear misses went to find the wine person, who said they had never seen it there. :( Not reliable though, are they !

I shall have to phone around.....damn the southern Rhone '07s x 5 plus one or two of the Crusted is not a goer now - bugger.

I'd better go out in the ole bone shaker tomorrow, and see what is what !

I love that powerful tannic seam that runs through a vintage port before it is ready, say at 8 years, when the sweet richness is countered, and the finish is peppery and perhaps a little hot for some folks.

Well my local-ish Sainsburys (also a big one) had plenty of the crusted but nowt else. The Tain Crozes L3L was all '06 .

No Lodi, no Yali. Its wine section is pretty poor these days. It could be due to it being in an area that is largely populated by muslims. Will try the next nearest tomorrow.

It could be me, as I've been ill, but tried a drop last night and it seemed to be fading. Everything was subdued and I found it a bit hard going.

This would be right up your street then as that is a perfect description of this port right now.

Sainsbury and Bargain Booze are remarkably similar these days.

Of the two I prefer BB as it's closer to home, cheaper and has better choice.
