The vineyards are located predominantly in Waihopai valley, Wairau region. The grapes were machine harvested from 10 year old vines at the beginning of April. Lower yields certainly intensified flavours and the overall cooler season meant varietal intensity was ensured. The long dry autumn allowed a steady flow with no stress points from any rain events. Cool fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks using aromatic yeasts

Catty, peapoddy. Tangy, pithy, nicely sharp. Not the fruity, gooseberry Marlborough SB taste. Dry and tangy.

EXTRA SPECIAL NEW ZEALAND SAUVIGNON BLANC 2010

The grapes were machine harvested at night to retain the vibrant fresh aromatics of this grape. The source was 11 different vineyard sites from across the Wairau Valley planted on river valley soils. The styles varied from grassy and more tropical Sauvignon Blanc characteristics, each harvested at optimum ripeness during late March/early April. The grapes were crushed at the Wither Hills winery and fermented in stainless steel tanks with temperatures controlled to between 12-14°C. A selection of different yeasts were used to reflect the expression of each site. The wine was fined before bottling.

Peapoddy and green nose – very fruity and inviting. Sweet, gooseberry flavour which lasts very well. If you weren’t sure what Extra Special means, buy this and the standard MSB and compare. Asda £2.42 well spent.

The 2011 growing season was sunny, cool and dry in New Zealand’s Marlborough region. The weather during summer was about average temperature, but autumn was cool, with clean, ripe fruit harvested with excellent intensity and crisp acidity. Crops were average, but most vineyards were thinned to enhance fruit intensity. The grapes were machine harvested from 10 year old vines. Temperature controlled fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks. No malolactic fermentation and no oak contact.

Nasty, stinky nose. You know how melons and mangoes, when they get over-ripe, start to stink? Just like that. Tangy but unlovely. Nope.

A long, dry and warm ripening period saw an earlier than expected harvest, producing clean, expressive fruit. The grapes were machine harvested from the Wairau Valley, Marlborough. The must underwent a long, slow temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel. No malolactic fermentation and no oak contact.

Light, floral, peapoddy aroma. Similar taste. This is the closest to the Loire of these Asda MSBs. It’s taut, bright, linear, fresh. Quite Loire-ish.
