£9.99 at Sainsbury's, reduced to £7.49 from 3rd Nov to 14th Dec 2010.

This wine is called Gran Reserva which we all know means zero in Chile. It's a purple colour and smells wonderful. Stalky and yet ripe, but also with some vanilla from oak.

Lovely taste. Fairly oaky, but not rough at all. I'd have this for Christmas lunch, if I were having something from the New World, which I'm not. Ripe without being sweet and beautifully refreshing. Mmmm

Fairly oaky indeed - blind tasting I would guess this was a Rioja. However, Rioja producers can't achieve such a delicious wine in 2 years.

At the double discount this has to be one of the best value wines out there.

Will be clearing the shelf tomorrow.

Wiz,

The Sainsbury's extra 25% disco for 6, finished at close of business on Tuesday 7th December. So clearing the shelf on Wednesday is not a goer !

The Sainsbury offer seems to be still on - got 25% off last night, I believe it may end on Friday now. There's nothing in store to say it's still on but it seems to have been extended.

I can concur with Mel and Wizz that this is very good and I'll get some more during the next Sainsburys discount
Nice rich oak and a strong blackcurrant note (reminded me a little of the the WR Chilean cab but a bit better integrated)

Thanks for the heads up Mel

Yep, I concur with Shez, I bought for the post Christmas slog for the younger palates, and was pleasantly :o . We were drinking the rest of the Crusted later that evening. Ripe without being sweet - yes, that is the reason why this wine is so much more satisfying, that the usual NW stuff.

The best carmenere I've possibly had. I've not tried a lot of them tho, but the 1st versions available several years ago were just new world guuuu. This one has personality and hid its ALC really well.

Was it 14.5 ABV ? dunno, went to the bottle bank before New Year, so can't look it up

I saw this too and I did wonder. Might be worth a try. The website is also showing Vina Eguia Rioja Gran Reserva 2001 as on offer, but I've not seen this in store. I'd definitely give that a try if I could find one.

Nice one, will look for this tomorrow.

I do wonder though, Gran Reserva Pinot Noir? How long can they actually sit on PN before release?
