100% Grillo. 2008 was a vintage where Sicily enjoyed a stable and warm growing season. The grapes were hand-harvested after 20th August 2008, when they had reached the optimum balance of ripeness and acidity. To ensure freshness and preserve aromas, the grapes were harvested very early in the morning. This vineyard area – Stagone-Mozia-Salemi – is in western Sicily, near Marsala, where the soils are composed of dense clay and the climate is mild. The wine has a short maceration on the skins before vinification in steel tanks. It is aged in stainless steel tanks before spending three months in bottle prior to release. This wine is made by Bruno Fina who runs this premium Sicilian winery, Fina Vini, with his family. Nice little birds on label. The wine seems quite green. I would swear that this is oak aged, even barrel-fermented, from the nose, but apparently it's ss all the way. Extraordinarily lovely, savoury smell. Yu-u-um. Very savoury taste. Surely some oak. Full bodied but refreshing acidity. What a find. * New, available 25th October, 220 stores, exclusive, synthetic cork 13.5% 14/10/2009
