2005-06 growing season was ideal. With good rains, the weather conditions allowed the vines to set an even crop of grapes. The lack of heat spikes in February, combined with cool nights meant that the vines, under no stress, accumulated sugars quickly while retaining natural acid. Grapes were picked to achieve full colour, wonderful flavours and balanced tannins With Merlot winemaking it is essential to avoid over-extraction of the fruit so this wine was made in static fermenters with careful pressing of the skins to ensure correct structure and weight were obtained without extracting hard tannins. Matured for 8 months in 24% new French oak Barriques & Hogsheads; the balance was matured in older French oak Barriques & Hogsheads

Smith & Hooper wines are sourced entirely from two Wrattonbully vineyards, adjacent vineyard blocks previously owned by the Smith and Hooper families. These are premium red wines from exceptional vineyard sites with Terra Rossa soil, a rich, free draining soil that is considered by many as the viticultural equivalent of discovering gold. Smith & Hooper were one of the first to plant in this area.

Minty and fragrant. Savoury and appealing and the alcohol’s in balance. 13.5%
