Like a garage on a warm day, with a tray full of cut limes on a sunlit bench and a couple of cans of petrol. Perhaps a recently used lawnmower, with remnants of cuttings on the wheels. Perhaps I should stop. Fabulous, dry and grippy taste. Wonderful wine.

I find PL semillon very similar to Clare Valley riesling. In fact, I think PL semillon is so good and such fantastic value at £5.99 that I would only now buy a riesling if it was on offer below the semillon price.

Tim Adams is good though but I think the Finest Tingleup gets much better as it gets older.

Any comments on semillon v Aussie riesling folks.

I kinda find Peter Lehman semillon (a while back) different than Mel's note for the TA Aussie Riesling. Are they comparable - dont know the TA.Clare Valley R.

Ba, The Tingleup needs at least two years in my opinion and I buy the 06 from one of the smaller Tesco stores near me.

The semillon is very intense. If you find the JE 08 complex then brace yourself.

Mel and GK are the champions of Aussie semillon and riesling. I note no reply from either so I assume my comparison to be a figment of my own imagination.

I do get strong lime on each and just a vague hint of petrol with the semillon.

Ho hum.

Smoky guava, that is a new taste to my perception. I should try, my dear Misses will be in J. Sainsbury on Friday.

15.5 from Jancis, so not in the 90+ club, Why Goose ? Does Jancis mark MSB against all other MSB or another criteria, or is she being cautious overall. Mel said Brute'ish but Good.

Goose - chalking up against your own Bench Marks for sub £10 bottles - I guess so ?

Goose, you awarded all those bleeding Stars - Had I been a newbie and read that post, I may have thought, what a ~#& :wink:

You could edit to Two Stars - Huh. Mel says that 2 Stars is the highest accolade, which is damn fine for the dosh actually .

Correct.
Until quite recently anything over a fiver was "expensive" and quite a rare purchase. In the last few weeks I've had an £11+ semillon, an £11 albarino, a £12 Leognan and several others at £8 or so. Now I need two rieslings and a new SB. 'Fraid my walate doesn't match my palate.
Shall have to let the second chauffeur go...

Some of us have work to do! :wink:

Semillon can lack the structure and in-ya-face appeal of Oz Riesling but when the producer gets it right, its heavenly, particularly unoaked examples with its lean, youthful period a distant memory and the acidity fading to let other flavours through. Shame I can’t keep it that long!

The early ripening Semillon is often picked young (thin skin), giving it its naturally low alcohol and brittle acidity, there’s no disguising its lovely, waxy, stone-cold lime flavours though and I simply love it.

Oz Riesling can vary quite dramatically from bone dry, fumy, grapefruit sharp, pungent and aggressive to gentler, slightly hollow, burnt citrus, depending on age.

For me, there’s something effeminate about Oz Riesling, always accessorised and showy but, like my wife, I couldn’t live without it. Semillon is more reserved, gentlemanly, get to know it and you find it more engaging with hidden depths and wisdom. Just like me ..... :lol:

I guess Jancis likes her sb more complex. There's little of that with this. Just pure flavour ( albeit an evolving one ) with a light body.

Bob'swinereviews gave the Saint Clair Vicar's Choice 2006 only very low 80's. These pro's want oak and skin contact with a hint of stalk.

They have no class.

Note to GK the Leasingham Magnus 08 is said to be back to it's very best. It was absolutely fabulous in 04 but has been a bit of a let down ever since.

It all depends whether or not you like a whiff of petrol with with your lime juice.

Personally I agree, I prefer a good aussie riesling but in these austere times it will require tesco to run out of PL semillon at £5.99 before I switch back to riesling.

No, no, surely.

Oz Riesing is lawnmowers and oily rags. The picture in my head is Hugh Jackman in a slightly tight grass-stained t shirt. German is sweet, feminine musk, caught on a warm summer breeze. I'll leave you to insert the appropriate picture.
