2005 MSB Found, by a mistake


I found this in my store yesterday, It somehow got lost in there, my wife had been given this bottle as a present, and did not take off the opaque and silver polka dot wrapping when putting it in the rack.

She thought it was a Macon when she was given it, at a hand-out pre Xmas Do. Lucky I checked ? Apparently there were Macon blanc or Malborough SB pre-wrapped pressies for delegates.

Not that bad actually - A more than Fino note, would be great with grilled oily fish. A tad tart, over acidic for the fruit, and a bit hard on the palate - BUT still fresh and nettles and red current leaves. I think this is a hard unforgiving style anyway. Could not find the passion fruit Loads of unripe hairy cooking gooseberries.

2005 was very different than the 2007 vintage in Malborough to my gums. Goose may have approved of this "edgy style with attitude" in 2007

Edit, that fino note has almost gone, and those huge hairy goosegogs (suitable for cooking in a buttery pastry or lattice pie only) have taken over again !

You can't get rid of the bloody things - give me something with some elegance - gore..... MSB like this sucks the teeth out of your gums, having stripped the enamel off

Remind me to drink a white Pouilly Fuisse or Saint Veran over Christmas - I need to relax.

I have my second St Veran now. The first was c**p, await this one.

Supermarket Saint Veran is usually C***P it is the stuff the French dont want.

Pouilly Fuisse and St Veran need some age anyway - Buy from Madge, then mature in your own store / cellar - I don't rate 2007 Maconaise / Challonaise at the very cheap end - Cheap end 2005, some 2003's and some 2006's are all ok, provided you pick the right producer.

2008 could be reasonable - spend a bit more, drink a bit less, is my message for French chardonnay wine luvers.

It's an '08 "Blason" from Sains (-25%) bought along with the c**p LE one.

Ba - The very First Thing I must Do - is wish you better luck with Blason. It could be perfectly reasonable, or better still - Quite nice.

Regrettably:

I'm no fan of Blousey Blazer - the 2005 offering from them was reasonable in Montagne 1er, but generally Big Girl's Blouse is not that exciting I'm afraid.

This is one, if I had space and a bigger budget.

2006 is an earlier but nnice vintage in Pouilly Fuisse - Louis Chavey made a *very nice hoover-up **2nd pass cuvee of Gevrey 1999 that I bought some time ago for £12 quid a bottle, and finished the last one this summer. Louis is a proper French chavvy, Big Blouse is a multi national outfit

I instinctively don't trust conquer the world brands...............
Experience confirms my lack of trust with most of them flogging off bigger french names, that the locals rejected in their own supermarkets

Looks like you're right Mr D. The Blason is a bit naff. Will try colder to see if that helps, else it gets blended.
Have a Jadot Fuissé which I DO like, though the Jadot Macon-Azé was a bit watery for my liking.

2002 was very good IMHO - excellent dry and ripe harvest, perfect fruit
2003 was over full and over hot for some - but quite nice for me
2004 was not good in Maconnaise - some folks like these lean styles
2005 Benchmark, and good keeping
2006 Lighter, but nice wines were made for earlier drinking, less oak for light fruit was the skill
2007 was watery in Maconnaise - I have not bought any cheapos
2008 - dont know - have not bothered - still enjoying stuff from '05 & '03
2009 Maconnaise growers are already crowing - perfect weather all season. Watch out though, for fruit picked from scrubland and claimed to be good.

Which vintage Ba ? I would like to know

'07 it was, £6.49 WR. It was not nasty, quite complex in fact but yeah, watery.
