Joe and Peter Babich were one of the first New Zealand wine producers to plant Syrah on the Gimblett Gravels in the late 1980's. Since then Syrah from this region has been widely acknowledged as one of the most successful red wine varieties that New Zealand can produce. This is a distinctly cool climate style similar to a Northern Rhone. Not at all like a big Aussie Shiraz.

A little stalky. Thin, and more like Pinot than Syrah. Oaky, cheesy texture. Not bad but atypical.

Mel, have you tasted any later vintages of this?

The '06 made it into MJ's top 60 NZ wines of 2009 and Gimblet Gravels is a decent region for syrah. In Tesco this morning I noticed a stack of the '07 reduced to £4.13, this particular store is shifting loads of stock, have picked up quite a few bargains recently.

I cant find anything on 'tinternet about the '07, I grabbed one to try, might go back for more.

Do you have your own "reduced label" printer??

It's unatural the number of bargains you manage pick up at your local supermakets !

I dont understand why you lot dont find more, they are out there! You just need to go regularly, get to know where the reduced shelves are and keep popping back, law of averages etc.

This particular Tesco store is in a chavvy area not far from where I work. There's always something to grab but once or twice a year they discount a tonne of stuff, even now there are two units (four shelves each) packed full of discounted stuff, mostly dross but some good stuff too like the Montes Alpha Chard & Cab Sauv at a fiver, plus everyday drinkers like the Inycon range at £2.49.

Im a firm believer in making your own luck.

I may take a photo when I pop back at lucnchtime.

Don't get any reduced vino round these parts either. Last time was 4 or 5 yrs ago when an 8 mile distant Somerfield was completely changing it's layout. And yeah my boy, that gargantuan smilie has ****ered the pagination.

gk, I think the size of that pic was necessary to reflect the the magnituted of frustration at another bargain found and only available in Staffs.

I regularly check out the shelves of my local supermarkets but have never found any extreme bargains as you do.

Anything coming up as reduced at best has ~25% off.

Never have I caught anything down in the £1-£3 area and the only 50% offers tend to be those that have a regular 50% discount applied like Banrocks etc...

There is nothing to be had in the Thames Valley and inside the M25. Honest Guv - we do check when we can.

I have found some good'uns in the East Midlands, but nothing in the way of serious end of line clearance east of Exeter and south of Watford.
