Beautifully American oak scented. Smooth, savoury and oaky in the mouth with great balance. Heavily perfumed - love it!

The Co-op also stock this (Signa), my local has a load on its 'clearence' shelf for £4 a bottle. Minus the six bottles I just took. Not quite the '01 but still very good indeed.

Not sure if this is nationwide Mel but surely worth a look?

Currently £6.99 at Majestic.
Smooth oak, warm vanilla and spicy. Lovely!

Damn, am doing a Rioja tasting on Monday and went to the Co-op looking for a Reserva and didn't see the Concordia.

I have 5 of 7 so far, and could do with a Rose and a Reserva. Any suggestions???

I know diddly squat about Rioja......although, after reading the many tasting notes on here I assume we're talking rich, full bodied reds and oaky whites.

You lot have no class..

Here's a pink from Waitrose

On the contrary, many Rioja's could be classed as medium bodied or even light to med which benefit from a gentle chilling (depends on the type of aging the wine has gone through).

I think a lot of the stuff that hits the UK shelves is heavily oaked and concentrated (over extracted?), quite the opposite to my experience of Rioja wines enjoyed when visiting Spain.

I prefer the lighter Crianza wines, less oak with cleaner fruit.

Good idea to get the Muga. Went to my local Waitrose though this week and didn't see it.

I like the Gran Reserva style because they are so lightweight and yet fragrant. I'm happy to drink a great big Barossa Shiraz, as well, but there's something lovely about the gentle, pale flavours of GR Rioja. We had the Muriel GR last night, with ribeye steak, bought at Sains last week during the 25% off promo. It was heaven.

Concordia produce a Rioja that is a notch up in quality called 'Hacienda de Susar'.

It is more difficult to get hold of, I have only had one bottle of the 2001 which I brought back from Spain but damn, it was bloody lovely. Nice bottle too, no label just 'silk screened' effect writing.
