Michael Schäfer Majestic Parcel! £7.99
Part of an exciting 12,000 bottle German parcel arriving mid-June
Very, very inviting nose. Heavy with luscious, petrolly Riesling. Exquisite taste. Sweet, but tangy but light, but fruity. Delicious


All of those things, this wine is. 8% ALC, Exotic, and tropical fruit cup as well, and I will try with a soft cheese first, to see where it fits on the dinner table. On a sweetness scale 1-5 it is a 4, so be sure to serve to those who appreciate this sort of wine.

There is a very slight effervescent note on the taste buds, which manifests itself as a sherbet confection, after the main luscious flush on the palate. If this wains with more time, the wine earns a bright star from me as well.

Time will tell, I will try stiring, and then putting back into the fridge to shift it.

For me, this wine needs further aging, it has reasonable tangy acidity, I'd say about two years or so.

I like the wine more after 24 hours. If one is laying this down, be careful to avoid a marmalade note - unless you want that of course.

Opened the first of my 6 case on Tuesday. The cork was a little discoloured and there was an odd smell, which I first mistook for rubber, suggesting some taint.

In the mouth it is wonderful though the high sugar content providing a luscious mouthfeel with strong orange flavour and maybe a hint of honey. A really wonderful and distinctive flavour. You need to be able to handle sweet though.

After a few minutes in the glass it dawned on me what the aroma was... vaseline... petroleom jelly... petrol. Odd that I've never experienced this before, although I've not drank very much Riesling.

Anyway I'm very happy I took 6 from this one-off parcel.

Yes Mr T, you have that about right. The vaseline though, I haven't smelt that since our kids grew-up; We have grandchildren so.... those orange & citrus floral bottom wipes perhaps ? - I can see where you're coming from there. The orange is more "of a new bottle of Grand Marnier and ripe skin zest", the flavour if you wanted to grate a little onto a desert for a topping. Fortunately, still fresh though. This candied orange peel, and other tropical fruits in there that I would have to concentrate on to properly identify, before writing further about the flavours.
My only minor reservation, (and that is only me) with the Rothenburg is that this flavour should remain fairly fresh.....I do not want it to evolve further, and go over to a marmalade "influenced" taste.

Lots of folk love that "influence" in best sauternes - but not I. ** So I'm looking forward to monitoring them as we go forward. which is easy, cos the bottles are so prominent in the racks

Richard cheers for that offer, I have never tried a 17 year old in the last 4 decades :wink: I'm not local - it's a long way for any of us.

** I will have to try another bottle soon, when the mood is right

It's definitely vaseline. We have a pot that gets occasionally use. No idea how old it is or if you can still get it. It's barely noticeable after 24 hours, anyway.

Everything else holds up fine, though. In fact its still fresh 6 days after opening. Could go on quite a while, this. Very pleased. Definitely worthy of a

This wine is not developing quite as I had hoped. OK it's 2003 - so exactly how much bottle development is expected since we purchased this wine only 6 months ago ?

It seems to be acquiring a sickly Trebor juicy fruit confectionary flavour, and a nose that is very boiled sweets, the finish with a sherbet note. I'm not very happy with this at the mo. Any petrol that was there has disappeared as well. I finished the wine as an apperatif.

I think - Hope - that it may just eventually acquire a mature hay and vaguely composty element to the flavour, which would be a lot more interesting for me.
