Little disappointed
Was hoping for more deep, chocolatey shiraz
Drinking nicely now though in terms of smoothness, not overly tannic
Best drunk over next couple of years, not a mid-long termer

Ive often thought that basic Oz Shiraz in the £4~£9 range lacks depth and power, nice but dim. I prefer a blend if I have a choice, you get a little more wallop for your money.

I really liked the '06 a couple months back. Mind you that's got a couple of years on this one.

I wonder what happened to the '07. Maybe the droughts in that year meant there was not enough fruit.

I think you might be right, GK. I can think of quite a number of good Oz shiraz blends under a tenner.

I tend to find that the Shiraz often over powers most of the of varieties in a blend

Then I haven't had the PL Clancy's yet or the Penfolds 76...

Still have to try one of the WR/St Halletts Barossa 2008 that I've had a little while. Mel said to give it some time so might just decanter a while or drink over a few days

It is not just me then !

I rated the Clancy '06, so I grabbed a few '06 Barossa Shiraz in the Spring when on offer

The last one I had, was one dimensional, not entertaining, just Shiraz and a bit gluey, and I thought ...Huh ....may be not ready, perhaps I'm getting finicky, and expect too much. No depth, no iron or peppery liquorish root, not tannic enough ! Just rather ordinary and a bit commercial. Sorry Tribs, not rated by me - but may be you never had the excellent '02, the good '04 and the brill '98

That '06 shiraz was half a mile away from the '02 ans '04's, Do I have rose tinted spectacles ? Probably. Is PL making commercial quick ready shiraz ? Probably

Peter Lehmann has been sifting out his best fruit for upscale low volume, premium specials. I'm pretty sure I've said this already here, just cant find the posting at the moment. However....and ... regretably, this deterioration in selection, and therefore the resultant ready now quality of the wine may be something we will have to lump or leave.

I'm not buying the '08 - sorry and all that.

The Ausies can make some delicious, fruity, light to medium bodied Shiraz's built for a quick drink. These I enjoy, I like the peppery bright fruit and off-sweet character, uncomplicated and easy on the oak with good acidity, almost Italian in style.

Here is a nice example of the style and one of the best I've had recently-

Yep GK agreed,

That is another style, oldies like me use to know Mr Lehmann for something else.

I do like the spice and savoury cut and peppery finish that tingles the tongue on the medium weight shiraz - more like ripe french crozes and Saint Joe, but I thought that the last PL Barossa '06 drunk here was a bit sweet as well - lots of decanting could help

GK, have you had any more of the Mitolo Jester Shiraz?

That was the last cheaper offering that I really enjoyed

Sadly it's not so widely available apart from online

No mate, but my local Indy sells it if ever I feel the need. This is made in a big style with a whack of dried grapes for extra body and umph. Once you move up into the £10+ shiraz wines the Ausies start putting their backs into it a little, and it shows.
