2006 and 2007 have been outstanding vintages for sauvignon in the Loire. So much so that a lot of Van Du Plonk De Ordinaire sb's from outside the famed appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly Fume have been making some outstanding wines at reasonable prices.

I have already waxed lyrical about La Grille Jardin at Waitrose being an excellent Sancerre mimic at £6.99 but Sainsbury can beat it.

Kiwi Cuvee has always been a bit of an overhyped disappointment. The idea being that NZ winemakers would come to the Loire and make a wine that tasted like Saint Clair/Montana etc and sell it for a fiver.

But they failed...how marvellous !

The wine was lightweight and worth about £3.49...which is ironic because that's exactly how much the new 2007 vintage is on offer for at Sainsbury.

And the wine is gorgeous...sod all like NZ ...it has a wonderful mineral/wet stones smell with a lovely smoky taste with just a vague hint of oh ok...Saint Clair like blackcurrant.

It's sort of Touraine meets Pouilly Fume with distant shades of Marlborough.

I've drunk several hundred sauvs from all over the world...and this is definitely on a par with any that i've had at £8 or under.

Lovely wine ...stunning value.

Offer lasts about a week.
