Nipped into Sainsbury’s this lunchtime, the place was heaving.

Did the rounds on the wine isle, not much of interest, usual stuff on offer.

Headed for the reduced shelf stuck in the far corner. Hello, what's this?

3x TTD Quinta da Eira Velhu 2000 Vintage Port, stained labels, looks like theres been a spillage. Reduced from £19.99 to £7.99. Muito obrigado.

Still very young, into a dark place they go. We'll meet again in a few years.

Wonderful deal

Amazing - GK, It is to do with your location.

That sort of stuff just does not happen down here. I think I need to move up to Lichfield. Enjoy.

Indeed, Jancis rates this quite highly and the guys on TPF give it the thumbs-up too.

Perfect ! Was about to start a thread asking about port

Personally I don't have the foggiest.

My mum suggested if I was short of xmas prezzie ideas that my dad liked a glass....

Here lies the problem: he ain't gonna drink a bottle of port within the space of a week and from what I understand as its a fortified wine it is best drunk fairly quickly (none of that keeping it for 3-6 month after opening)

I'm lost on the whole vintage and LBV stuff. Then you have filtered and unfiltered...
I understand that filtered is more ready to be drunk than unfiltered (which needs decanting when serving correct ?)

Any advice appreciated. He's no connoisseur, just likes a drop of tawny. What's best to get?

I'd go for Tawny every time. Taylors 10 yr old or 20 yr old depending on your budget.

will go and have a mooch in a bit then.

Am I right with my assumption that this has to be drunken soonish after opening ?

Edit: Have found the answer on wiki:
wikipedia wrote:
Port, like other wine, should be stored in a cool but not cold, dark location (as light can damage the port), with a steady temperature (such as a cellar), lying the bottle on its side if the bottle has a cork, or standing up if stoppered. With the exception of white port, which can be served chilled, port should be served at between 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. Tawny port may also be served slightly cooler.

Once opened, port wines must be consumed within a short period of time.[clarification needed] Those with stoppers can be kept for a couple of months in a dark place, but if it has a cork it must be consumed sooner. Typically, the older the vintage, the quicker it must be consumed.

Port wines that are unfiltered (Such as Vintage ports, Crusted and some LBVs), form a sediment (or crust) in the bottle and require decanting. This process also allows the port to breathe; however, how long before serving is dependent on the age of the port (particularly in the case of Vintage ports, which, once decanted are recommended to be consumed within 3–4 days)

gonna head over to Oddbins and Maj on the way to the station for a look.

I also notice you wrote a decent tasting note for M&S 10yo Tawny. That worth a go? I had a look at the bottle when I was out at lunch but then thought to hold off until asking for the gang's advice

Dont be afraid to keep your port in the fridge, especially tawny. It soon warms up in your hand, in the small glass. Tawny benefits from a light chilling.

Tawny port is nice, in an 'Im a lady' sort of way. LBV & VP is the way to go.

If you buy LBV, go with unfiltered, better for aging and usually a decent wine.
