What does it taste of. I've never had one. I've heard that it tastes similar to Loire sb and Alsace gewurz and some say it's just medium sweet over priced dross.

Any lovers of Bacchus.

I love Bacchus. I bought a couple of bottles of the Chapel Down when WR had 25% off. Like a musky Sauvignon. Spicy and a bit macho on the nose. Maybe like a warm man's armpits, in a good way. Not sweaty, but more earthy than Sauvingon. In the mouth it's very Sauvignon/Verdejo-like. Sometimes the English version is slightly off dry, but not always. A grape I'm very fond of.

Yes, I have been treated to the Chapel Down one sold in Waitrose, during the Summer when discounted. I quite liked it. Sweet dross, No, not at all. Quite a good cut to the palate in fact. Interesting, and the union jack. Difficult flavour to pin down, an earthy twist is right.
It would sell more, if it was not usually £10.

Tesco had the 2006 Chapel Down for £9.99 the other week. The vintage put me off. I guess this is a wine that's best when fresh ?

I cant remember the Summer 2006, '07 and '08 were not special - but then Mel will answer ageing ability and importance of freshness with Bacchus. Dont know ? from what I remember - it feels high acidity in the mouth because the fruit and body is light, but with pronounced flavour - so for me, I'd prob want a settledown period.

Mel will inform, I'm sure. It's English 8)

However 2009 was a Indian Summer with wonderful dry and warmish October - I'm predicting that some english wines and champagne (sparkling) could be good from late harvests and ripe fruit. The summer was wetter, but on well drained chalky slopes - who knows. Beaky Bottom is quite steep

English growers could do with a break. I will buy some 2009 when released, yes I will.
