Bet that title draws a few hits. Just got a book from the library on the development of rail in this area. One of the first big users was a Bristol wine merchant who was trying to combat pilfering by canal boat owners. They would syphon off some wine from the barrels and replace it with water. This practice was known as the above title.

I fell in a canal once....the water wasn't that bad.
