Have just had an email from Sainsbury's.

It seems that

Lanson, Mumm, Piper-Heidsieck,
Heidsieck Co Monopole,
Nicolas Feuillatte

are reduced to £15 until 7th Dec

Hi Mel....t'is Good, I was hoping you might do a Champagne report. Inspite of the negative comments from some folk around here, about fizzy wine....etcetera !

Since I have stock of the T.Finest 1er cru, which is excellent value for the quality, I was looking for a few other choices in that price bracket. Mumm can be good as well as Black label. Off hand, do you know which one of the above, has more Pinot noir in the cuvee, since the T.Finest 1er cru tastes as if it is Meunier / Chardonnay dominated.

I was looking for a fuller 'nutty' version with the snob value label

No comments about 'nutty' please GK  . Some of us like champagne - OK ........I'll try the lime trick, if we get a Summer in 2009 !

Sorry Duncan, I rarely get to taste these wines in the work environment, where the variety split is given.

If I had more time I could trawl through years of tasting booklets and come up with something, but it's not to hand.

Try their websites, there'll probably be something useful.

Mel, decision is made....my dear Misses is a Head Teacher ! Whilst we were supping tea in bed at 7 AM this morning, I mentioned your tip at Sainsbury's to the Misses. Without further addo, she immediately lept for the Black Label. OK... She does the real shopping around here.

I said, how are you going to carry that stuff, it's heavy ! "I've got a trolley and a car" " So what's the problem ?

I'm hoping she'll serve it in a festive mini black cocktail dress  No No, in champagne flutes of course, silly me.

Hope there's some left on the shelves on Friday evening !

Here is the purported cuvee for Black Label:

"The grape mix for Lanson Black Label is 35 per cent Chardonnay, 50 per cent Pinot Noir and 15 per cent Pinot Meunier. Good to drink now, this would also benefit from a year or two stored somewhere cool and dark, gaining in biscuity flavours"
