Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Petite Sirah and Syrah. The season started with a wet Spring which lead to excellent early growth and canopy development. Weather was generally mild up to the last week of July when Napa experienced a brief heat spell, which sped up the ripening process and led to uniform fruit maturity at harvest. Alc 14.5%, pH 3.67, RS 0.3g/l. Available from 235 branches including Waitrose Cellar


Dark, moody and excitingly savoury cassis. Rich, ripe and fabulous. Expensive, but it feels it.

Here's how to buy this for the weekend.

You or your partner have to own a Waitrose shopping card. On Wednesday you received a voucher in your inbox worth £5, if you spend more than £25 on 75cl bottles of wine. Print off this voucher to hand over at the till, and cut out the coupon. Just now, First Press cab is discounted to £13.99 in many Waitrose stores.

Therefore buy two bottles for £27.98 hand in your voucher with your card for swiping, and you get your First Press cab vintage 2011 for £11.49 per bottle.

There you go, Not too Expensive. . . . but it feels Expensive

I've not received the offer from Waitrose this time around unfortunately. Sounds pretty good. I had some £12 off £60 shop vouchers when the recent fine wine sale was on so managed to use them then. Unfortunately I didn't pick up any of the first press
I have a friend with half a dozen a the first press though, so perhaps I'll try offer him something in exchange

I plan to acquire more myself, if the opportunity arises. You may remember from past posts I've made, that in the very early 90's I bought half decent Beringer and Buena Vista cab and was pretty impressed in the way those wines developed with more time. (2 dollars to the pound back then)

So I'm hoping that something extra evolves with this First Press. I'm afraid, you won't hear from me about this cab for quite a while, unless a guest is particularly persuasive

Unfortunately, the dollar exchange rate has been moving against us for serious buying, and has contributed to QPR appearing to be a bit out of line.
