There's some seriously good deals there, could easily spend £500.

I have grabbed a case of the Jim Barry Lodge Hill Riesling 2011, a highly regarded Riesling which is hopefully showing a touch of toast and character by now, just over £6 and free delivery, I'll have some of that.

Quote:
95 pts James Halliday June 2011
Bright, pale green, the wine has a complex bouquet of spice, citrus and apple, the perfectly balanced palate even more complex, with its flavour span anchored by citrus but extending into cool climate chardonnay notes of white peach and grapefruit.
90 pts Wine Spectator Web Only - 2012
Bright and zingy, this glistens with lime and green apple flavors, which keep skipping through the long, deft finish. Drink now through 2018.
90 pts Wine Advocate Issue #199 Feb 2012
The 2011 Lodge Hill Dry Riesling has intense lemon juice and grapefruit aromas with hints of white pepper, coriander seed and dill seed. Very crisp, dry and concentrated it has a light to medium body and a good long finish. Approachable now, it should keep to 2018.
90 pts Wine Enthusiast November 2011
Quintessential young Clare Riesling, with lime sherbet aromas and flavors and a delicate thread of talclike minerality running through it. It’s light to medium in body, very clean, fresh and zesty on the finish. Drink now, or hold 5-7 years to allow a more evolved, toasty character to emerge.

There certainly are GK.

Some serious discounts for some very good wines, one could easily spend a large amount. How well stocked are you ?

I will review the affordable ones a bit later today. A ray of sunshine, which makes the dreadful weather in the south east of England, a little bit more bearable this morning.

Cheers

Well stocked, that's the trouble, torn between not wanting to miss out on a deal and finding room for yet more wine :?

Also tempted by the Ata Rangi SB '11, a touch of oak (10%) should help longevity, what say you Goose?

That is exactly the situation here. I have learnt to be a little more modest this summer, so there is some room in the Inn. However, I've been doing less entertaining, and cutting back a bit. So my recent resolve is on the back burner again

The JBL riesling id very tempting, and I'd also like to hear from Goose about that Ata Rangi SB '11. I hardly bought any vintage 2011 SB, so I'd not have a clue. Also my white storage cooler is up to the gunwales, yet cool weather is now upon us. So. . . . .

Just thinking - Goose may be offline, and on the M4 right now, he's a Kate Bush fan, and her comeback concert after 35 years off the stage is on tonight at the Hammersmith Odeon.

This is not an add for Kate, tickets were sold out weeks, if not months ago.

The oak should help preserve it. But only in the same way that a double dose of Sanatogen could help preserve a quadruple great granny of 112.

Leave it be. And avoid the Sancerre. It's all orange citrus and no minerality.

You've been warned.

Hi Goose, Thanks for the info, you are clearly at home in the motherland.
Shame about the Sancerre, 2010 was supposed to be a good vintage, at least the fruit was ripe enough on that Alain Girard wine. Taking all six is always risky commitment.

Thanks for quick response.

This is why I generally look for the Riesling amongst the clearance offers, most other whites are being sold because they are past/almost past their best, at least with Riesling a bit of age can often benefit the wine.

Pikes Clare Valley Riesling 2010 6 £81.00 £46.02 £7.67 43.2%

The Jim Barry 2012 @ the CoOp for £9.99 was too austere and rich for me even without any bottle development. I like wines to develop like the Peter Lehmann Semillon 2002(?) or a Ladoucette Pouilly Fume. Golden, low acid, concentrated lush flavour but still lightish in body. Toasty can sod off.

The Pikes could be more my style. Not sure if I will buy though.

I only bought the one Girard Sancerre. From Culverhouse in Cardiff. They have some fine wine boxes. For City folk with more money but less taste than us poor coastal plebs.

I would love to see Kate at the Hammersmith Odeon. But I'm doing probate. The solicitor wanted £8k+ any unforeseen extras. The work is endless. My brother based in England helps but it's a billion phone calls, letters and emails.

People keep popping in with cake. Why cake. Is this some Celtic custom that nobody told me about.

Sorry - off topic

Compared to **sharp solicitors here in the Thames valley (£ signs in their eyes when you approach them with an initial consultation about inheritance and probate). So depending on the estate, £8k may not be that strong for a routine estate with a property. Did they offer to reduce the fee when you said you'd DIY the probate work ?
**Not all solicitors - of course. The software they use to run IHT205 and the full IHT400 pack is very expensive, so you just might end up paying the bright young lady trainee in the office, a solicitors charge out rate. 40 hours or a week's work.

Probate work is doubled-up when a brother (could be named) a joint executor - It does not halve the load, because you end-up re-reporting all decisions and progress, and then, when the proverbial hits the fan, having to justify decisions that you may have made for expediency. Good luck with it, keep calm.

The Tesco clearance offer,
The deals I was interested in went like hot cakes. I looked in the next morning with my decisions, and all of those were OOS - I did not let myself get "suckered in" with 3rd choices ! Perhaps, just as well, I'm well stocked.

Some very good mixed case deals have appeared today. These should be viewed from your email link or under the Big Clearance offer on their website.

I bought the Finest limited addition case (with the '08 Margaux and '08 Pauillac plus VM North Row MSB and an Alto Adige (Italy cool climate) chardonnay.
And, for the free deliver over £50 qualification, I also bought the Montes Alpha 2011 Cab case, with 2 bottles *Kaiken Argentinian Cab amongst them, *I do not know this wine, but they say 50 year old vines . . . . . so should be more than OK.

The total order delivered free and with a small voucher I had, the total worked out at £6 per bottle !

If you like decent cabernet sauvignon with some oak, I don't think you can beat that sort of deal, also your get a nice variety of styles.

Enjoy your week-end

Just read the following article on how Albariño can now last and develop up to 10yrs
http://www.decanter.com/people-and-plac ... r-30082014

Might be worth getting a couple to see how they age...
