My router has been murdered by a scheduled power cut and I have no internet at home. Am picking up a new one today and hope to be back in the saddle tomorrow. I can read emails from time to time, but can't contact with the outside world. This is when you need an IT consultant living with you. Damn.

Hi Mel,

My router has been murdered by a scheduled power cut

Why ? How ? The mini transformer could be buggered - check plug fuses, should be 3 amp, quick blow.

Hey Mel, get yourself a 4 port Netgear ADSL2 and modem router, then you can network your computers, laptops and a printer if you like. Has built in Firewall as well. Dont forget to give yourself a Router password and Network name, (Wireless WPA/2 Key is the code you type in to access the wireless) this is your password OK. Make sure you do this, otherwise all the nosey jerks who park outside you house with a built-in wireless laptop, and neighbours can see what you are doing - OK

The netgear router just re-boots itself when you pull the plug. Keep pulling the plug and the router just comes back for more. Get yourself a medium power router - then use anywhere in the house and in parts of the garden.

Ditch the providers freebies, they are generally complete junk and get locked-up when very busy. If netgear gets looped with too many instructions, just pull the 8 volt black line from the back of the router (from the mobile phone style transformer) for 20 seconds, plug in again and wait for the device to re-boot ( ie -port and dsl yellow lights to come up again)

You can do it :)

Job done -

The router had lights on, but the system couldn't see it. It had fried. Anyway, my beautiful and wonderful son came back from Uni as an emergency and my excellent best friend went to Argos and bought a new Belkin and a nice boy in Durban in Plus Net tech support did his thang and I now have the internet back.

I was so unhappy without it. Or perhaps unhappy at the lack of ability to deal.

Sorted, done and now time to move on.

Tokaji tasting tomorrow and masterclass. Excellent!

Gaudeamus igitur. My freeview black box was fried by lightning last year. The Tokaji date looks good (and unusual).
