Very sad news. Such a lovely person, it's a real shame I never got to meet her after all these years
A real loss, my thoughts and prayers go to her family

It is very sad news, it is so sudden, and such a shock for many of her followers, particularly after we all thought she had made such a stoic recovery after the chemo. I say stoic, because she carried on with all her hard work all through the treatment. Our hearts and sympathy go to her family, my deapest sympathy must go to her husband and to her daughter, who transcribed her tasting notes to this site after many of her long tasting sessions

Mel was always very busy after recently moving home to deeper countryside north of Stroud. We must thank Jancis for letting us know just how much work she was doing as an Instructor for the MW courses. Mel was such a modest person, with a brilliant palate, and of course her training and instruction was hugely valuable to those who followed her. I am so sorry that I never met her, on the few occasions I spoke to her on the phone, she was utterly charming, informative and engaging.

She shall be missed by many more folks than she could possibly imagine, her introduction to this site on the first page, sums up perfectly her contribution and help for wine lovers, I can't think of anyone who has made a more qualified contribution for consumers, those of us, "who don't have such deep pockets" than Mel.

Many shall remember her line . . . ."I don’t want to be some posh bird who expects everyone to be able to list the classified growths of 1855 alphabetically, because I certainly can’t and that’s nowhere near the point of wine".

Mel suffered a stroke in June which severely limited her activity and she died on Friday morning after a sudden deterioration in her health.
Please continue to post about wine, life and everything - that is what QO is for.
If anyone has any ideas about how we can keep Quaffers' Offers going, please email mel@quaffersoffers.co.uk and Mel's husband, David, will pick those emails up.
We will post again when we have more news.

This is being posted from Mel's account by a friend.

Very sad news. I only knew her through QO but I always found her opinions of a wine a good guide as to whether I would enjoy it - I credit her for improving my palate and knowledge.
My condolences to those who loved her and were loved by her.

So sad.

I've enjoyed the banter with Mel for a number of years, it was always clear she was an incredibly smart woman with many talents.

As someone who's currently supporting a loved one through Chemo I know how much inner strength it takes to remain positive and active.

I shall raise a glass to you this evening Mel, rest in peace.
