Post subject:  Morrisons Taste Test

I've just done the Morrisons Taste Test https://www.morrisonscellar.com/shop/taste-test

I quite liked the questions they asked me as they seemed relevant, but these are my results. I was a little indignant, but then wondered if I do, in fact, have a sweet tooth. However, I do like sharp wines as well as rounded, fuller-bodied wines.

Lucky you! You have a sweet tooth, which means you’ll love wines that are juicy and rich in flavour. You’re less likely to enjoy very sharp and acidic wines. Scored 2? You may find that you may also enjoy wine with a touch of sweetness. There are plenty of white wines that might appeal if you have a sweet taste, like fruity Moscato and Riesling. If you're a 2 or a 3 you may also like something a little fresher, so maybe try a Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay.

Suggest you all try it and see what you get. Maybe a score of 2 just means you have very good taste.

6 | Fresh

I have a preference for citrusy whites and New World reds, which are typically enjoyed in their youth, so I guess Fresh it is.

Me too. Ah, this might be the problem. I like all wine, apart from cheap pinot grigio which, strangely, the test suggested I might like.

The problem with these tests is that no matter how you answer the questions the result is always to drink Morrisons wines. You could be allergic to wine and the test will still tell which of Morrisons wines suit you best.

Lame marketing trick ....both of you go and stand in the corner and share the dunces cap.

Disagree, there are some people who don't know what they should be drinking and need some direction. Clearly, the Forum regulars need no such encouragement.

I agree. But a test that tells a lover of light bodied, acidic, pungent sb and with a slight allergy to oak that he will like oaked chardonnay is clearly not a test that will help newbies discover their tastes.

This amswer is so far wide of the mark that it couldn't be any wider off the mark if it was a ' what farmyard animal have you got ' test that told a young clueless farmer that his field full of cows was a pond full of ducks

This taste test is pure marketing.

Of course its marketing, derr, since when was Morrison's a charity?

It can still help some people, if it takes them out of their comfort zone ocasionally.

Hmmm. So I too am fresh (4)
While I'd say my palate is quite diverse and that there is a wine of every style that I'd probably enjoy. Whilst not wanting to fan the flames of the discussion so far, I'd say it's pretty inaccurate and pointless
should I be looking for a wine with a style to suit me this tool wouldn't likely provide it ...but then based on 3 questions about hot drinks, soft drinks and salt you can't really expect much

I am a Fresh as well. Did it first from the bottles.

From the video, my AV programme running caused a few delays with blocking my feed back/preferences identity with a click !

I decided to take it once more, I noticed chips on the plate, and I would generally apply a sprinkling of salt to taste ? Yet many of us just put a little mound of pepper & pinch of salt on the edge of the plate with boiled eggs for breakfast, and dip.

When I did that, I moved from a 4 to Ba's & GK's number 6.

The first white wine they offered was  Pinot Grigio - I have not knowingly bought a straight pinot grigio for many years. since a dreadfull non descript offering from Lombardi about 15 years ago at a Party, I was fashionably late (rude) long'ish drive there, and all the empty bottles on the kitchen table were better wines.
The test was true to the point that I don't like gloopy sweet and extra heavy black Oz reds much. But will drink the dark tannic beast with suitably heavy food, say Penfolds 407 cab, 389 and Turkey Flat clones, etcetera. They say light pinot noir from Burgundy or NZ would suit me. The term light (as opposed to dark !) weight ? Dunno.
I like well judged oak, I'll drink a tannic Cornas as long as it is not puckeringly astringent, I love Sauterne (not too marmalade though) prefer Climens & Filhot styles.

This test is for people who don't know their preferences - therefore . . . . . . . . . pinch of salt

Anyway - To add value:

If anyone wants to recommend a decent Pinot Grigio, I'll give it a swirl and report back. Cheers

It's not just pushing Morrisons wines, however, if it's steering Goose to oaky rich numbers, any wine lover can see it has some issues. Pity.

Hi GK,

I don't think I'm social media challenged - probably am !

Just can't think who MSE are ? Edited later. Ah, yes  Martin Lewis's website, he's good at knocking credit card providers, gives 'em a good hiding.

Anyway, as for Morrisons, they recently paid Ocado a very large amount of dosh for a web shopping and delivery Systems.

Ocado also offering 20% off (shopping this week, email code), in addition to Waitrose initiated wine discounts.
