Majestic have opened a new store in my area, long overdue Any recco's for my first mixed case? Possibly a couple of decent whites for over the holiday period plus some everyday gluggers. I dont need any fizz, recently aquired a case (aint that right Shezza? ) Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas..... |

http://www.majestic.co.uk/Leyda-Rieslin ... searchterm: This will either be rich and lovely or rich and hard work. The offer price of £7.99 is about £9 more than you normally pay for a bottle of wine but it's still cheap if it's good and it has 3 years bottle age.. |

Goose, That Riesling looks interesting I'm on the look out for some decent yet affordable Riesling. Preferably one that isn't all just petrol, lime and apple |

GK wrote: Any recco's for my first mixed case? Fizz ? ) Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas..... GK, If you've been following my Guigal CdR thread, Majestic are doing the 2010 vintage now on extra special offer for £7.99. This, along with the 2009 is quite a serious wine and will reward keeping. The 2009 was one of Tom Cannavan's wines of the week, a good while back, and he gives the wine a drink or keep and improve for 5 years. if you want to check-it-out further, have a look in there. Neither of these two vintages is considered too dry for your palate - I believe . It is more tannic and structured that the Tesco Plan Dieu cheapo, though. The Martin Codax Albarino is £6.66 at the mo, If my memory is correct, you quite like that one with the apricot and peach notes. Are there any cheap but good gluggers anymore ? |

Thanks D, I dont think I've had the Codax before but will look out for both. There are still decent gluggers around, they may be a pound or two dearer than a few years back but some still offer excellent QPR, Im currently enjoying a very well made seven year old Rioja I picked up for a touch over £5, if this was decented and served to guests at dinner it could easily pass for a wine two or three times its price. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7967 |

On the subject of gluggers, my recent look-out says that they are much more tricky to find. Yeah, I know the Tesco Gran Fabrica Carinena quite well, Carinena is a sub region of Aragon, well west of Rioja, say 90 miles ? perhaps, and slightly south on the latitude line. This Gran Fabrica has about 20% Cab in the mix ? I think, that lifts the palate, the cab lends structure to the wine very well. I know the 2001 and 2004 vintages. I thought the '01 a bit too oaky without food, and too tired & woody for the old fruit, the 04 however was good stuff, and interesting. Tesco held on to the 2001 for far too long, or bought the whole lot for clearance. Based on that, the '06 as you say, is just about right. GK, I haven't done the Codax Albarino, was it Ba whose said positive stuff about the wine ? So I can't say anymore. |
