Thanks for posting that Oz Clarke article Richard. A good reminder of the tax numbers and logistics. What is the wholesale cost of a glass bottle and the printed label, labels ? For the average at a fiver, the producer is at the bottom of the pile, and the taxman is on the top ! I don't knowingly have a 20p bottle in my cellar, I do knowingly have some personal imports (tax paid in France) in wine boxes. I agree with the minimum price for alcohol to subsidise initial and monitored hospital treatment for addiction, if a small element of the tax take was ring fenced, but that is another matter. |

I have never understood why tobacco, petrol and booze attract such massive amounts of tax. At the pump, with supplier and distributor happy, a litre would be about 50p. With normal vat that becomes 60p. Instead, however there is another 70p of 'duty' making a total of 80p tax on a product costing 50p. I.e. 160% tax. After the report and the banter with Watchdog’s presenter, they showed us how much we spend on the actual wine (after tax, logistics and the supermarkets cut) as you spend a little more at the counter: Spend £5 get only 20p worth of plonk Spend £7.50 get £1.66 worth of wine Spend £10 get £3.13 worth of vino (15 x as much as the £5 plonk) Spend £15 get £6.04 worth of nectar (30 x more than the £5 stuff) |
