I suspect that Duncan is, at this moment, drooling onto his steering wheel as he heads up the M1. |

Out of interest, who pays for that lot? Or is it a case of each attendee bringing along a specific bottle? |

Whatever your budget, no matter how wealthy you may be, you can't drink from your collection on your own Rich, I'd be fooling myself If I could say which one of those very fine northern Rhone wines was a favourite, I don't know them, most of them I've never had before. Part of the pleasure with these sorts of events, is the sharing of what you have in your cellar. If I were to pick a favourite style - it may be the Côte Rôtie wines. I've enjoyed Guigal's Brune en Blonde on quite a few occasions. Of the Condrieu, it would tug like mad, it has only twice passed my lips ! As with the best sauterne wines, the beauty of the sublime flavour is unlike any other. |

GK, Hi, we decide a theme and then declare a nice wine/s to bring along to share. Dunc, Will report back with some TN`s, the 78 and 61 are the ones which are getting me excited though. We have two spare slots if anyone can get to Sheffield for 6.30pm ?? |

I see. Just checked my cellar, I have a rather nice Tesco Simply Côtes Du Rhône that's aging considerably well for a 2011 vintage. I'm happy to bring it along if there is a space left for me? |

GK, it could just round the night off I reckon !! Will keep your space open, has it been standing up for a few days though ?? Those 2011 are starting to age and plenty of sediment is building up. |

Going to be some colourful teeth after that lot! Maybe the Condrieu last and it might work the same as removing stains from clothing? |

Hi, we have two bottles of the Condrieu funny enough !! One to start and one to finish with. That will be a first for an offliner for me, start and finish with the same wine. |

Here it is, it would appear that Cellar tracker folks are not drinking the wine when it is young and beautiful I don't have experience, but at the price, one should take when "nearly" perfect. Their TNs suggest that folks are messing up with the drinking window ! Rich tell us about the '06 at 5 years from release. Are you drinking the standard, or La Doriane ? |

Dunc, As promised here are my basic thoughts from the night. New venue this time for our offliner !! Wig and Pen Campo Street. Warm welcome and service was excellent, very happy to help with changing elements of the menu etc. Main course will need beefing up a little for the next offliner. Great company and a new member in Jon !! Fantastic wines most probably one of the best I have attended over the last 5 years. Wines, here are my novice notes. Guigal Condrieu 2006 One bottle opened pre starter, honey flowery nose, not crisp but not fat, deep honeysuckle flowery edge, rich smooth wine good length. Great balance and a wonderful start to the night 92/100 2006 Jeannine Boutin St. Joseph Parcelle de Jean Deep purple, redcurrant nose, young, tannins still at the forefront, sharp red fruit good acitiy, 89/100 2006 Allemand Cornas chaillot We poured this at the same time as the 07, and on first impressions was a much more developed wine, most agreed. Deep berry fruity nose, tannins were more integrated than the 07, zippy red fruit with a meaty mix on the palate. Not as complex as the 07, but still very enjoyable. 89/100 2007 Allemand Cornas Chaillot Two notes, first pour – Sherberty rose petal nose, tight and tannic not my cup of tea. We all decided to leave it in the glass and revisit 30 minutes later, so glad we did as this changed completely. Nose was more calm with sweet berry notes, bacon/meaty with a peppery edge and a log fire gently finished this amazing wine. Much more complex than the first pour and a wine I would love in my cellar. 93/100 Delas Frères Seigneur de Maugiron Côte Rôtie 2004 Smoky nose, light garnet, sharp currant and plum on the palate, good length 91/100. 2004 Hermitage Les Bessards Delas Rich sweet berry nose, light garnet, sharp red berry fruit with a smoky edge turning more sweet black berry on the finish, wonderful balance great length just how it should be 95/100 My WOTN just. 1961, Decanted 10 minutes before serving, I was rushing around at this time opening bottles etc, my brief note reads, light garnet orange edge, Raisin touch tannins still noticeable, medium length. 88/100 Paul Jaboulet Ainé La Petite Chapelle Hermitage 2001 Fruity spicy Christmas pudding nose, more approachable the Chapelle 95, tannins well integrated, nice balanced wine spicy edge on the finish 92/100. 1999 Noël Verset Cornas. Second bottle I have had now and this one was much more developed the nose was much softer with gentle note of farmyard very nice indeed, Rich black berry fruit with a meaty mouthful, smoky edge and a long pepper finished, tannins well integrated a well balanced wine. 93/100 1999 Jasmin Cote rotie Not on top form but still enjoyable, garnet colour, dis-jointed a little hard to explain. I should have left it in the glass for a while and report back. Hopefully others can comment on this one 87/100. 1998 Plessy cote rotie Crimson with an orange rim, deep berry nose, well balanced black berry with a spicey smokey edge length very good. 92/100 1995 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle Fresh sharp red berry nose giving an impression of a young tight wine, Deep garnet with orange rim now telling me its more mature than the nose ?? Redcurrant sharp with a plumy edge, tannins still abundant, once again a few left this in the glass to open up. It improved with time and more spice and pepper came through. Medium length 90/100 Finished with another bottle of Guigal Condrieu 2006 with the cheese course. Regards Richard |

Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot - This 2007 could have been the top wine of the night had the owner waited another 3-5 years. I'm glad the 2004's were showing very well, I'd predicted that on Friday. I bet you were pleased that your 1999 Noël Verset Cornas drank nicely The 2001's were more favoured in the southern area, CNDP which I know much better, cos they are just about affordable - or were so The '61 was well past its peak fruit wise - But you didn't open the 1978 Jumelles cote Rotie ? Which may have been a survivor - since '78s were a 10/10 vintage I believe. I shared a magnum of the 'ordinary' the entry level Delas Cornas at a lunch in Bristol with two other guys about 20 years ago, and had to be driven home by my dear Misses. Interesting that the 2006 wine was early maturing in Cornas - just so, as they are in the Nuits and Volnay & Santenay, in the Cote d'Or So this 2006 Guigal Condrieu was not waining then ? Thanks for reporting back so promtly |

Dunc, Hi, the 1978 Jumelles was rather flat so the chap swapped it for the Plessy 98. The white was fantastic and actually one person voted it as their wine of the night. Agree about the 07 being too young but he was struggling to locate two bottles for the night without ordering a case etc. Glad I tried it though as it really will be a cracker in time. Thats my posh drinking finished now until Christmas !! |
