NB, the Waitrose offers, which were until 6th June have gone back a week - or forwards, depending on how you think. That leaves them with a spare week. Just sayin'... |

That Cat is horrendous. Are there any stars in that Waitrose campaign. Looks rather dull. May be not ? Junk clearance, or what ? Picked up some Chat Picard 2001 St. Estephe from the competition on Saturday, along with Goldwater'10 at the offer price. I don't think my Waitrose deserve the supermarket wine provider of the year for 2012 - So far ! |

Have you tried the Mystic Peak MSB? On offer now @ £7.49, quite a bargain imo. A very good wine at that price, great credentials too. Everything you could want from a MSB. A definite Waitrose star |

No, no I haven't, this wine did catch my eye though, and then my judgement was clouded by a daft and random "Mystic Meg" connection, and I dumped it. I didn't look-up the wine's credentials - which are ? We shall have to put it through its paces. Thanks, this is your 1st Post , keep posting if you find wines that are above the usual standard, or unique and interesting |

I only know what I gleaned from a Waitrose pr when they first stocked the wine. I jut thought that a winemaker of such repute wouldn't produce anything too bad...... This is 100% single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from a site in the Southern Valleys sub-region of Marlborough. The vines are planted on a combination of soil types, with fine silt loam and free-draining alluvial gravels. The trellising system used is vertical shoot positioning, with a combination of two, three and four cane pruning regimes. The row layout is true north-south facing to maximise exposure to sunlight and the planting density is typical for Marlborough, with a row width of 2.6m and vines spaced at 1.8m apart. The vines were planted in 2003 and 2004. The fruit was harvested in April in three different parcels from two distinct areas of the vineyard from the 2nd - 11th April. The high diurnal temperatures and long Autumns create ideal conditions for building intensity of flavour and concentration. The grapes were mechanically harvested in the cool of the morning and on arrival at the winery were de-stemmed and gently pressed. Cool fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with ‘Elegance’ yeast and post-ferment the new wine stayed on light lees before being blended and prepared for bottling. Winemaker Eveline Fraser. Alc 13.0%, TA 7.45g/l, pH 3.19, RS 3.9g/l. This is archetypal Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc: fresh, fruit driven and oozing with tropical and grapefruit notes intertwined with a fresh herbal character. Exclusive to Waitrose. |

Wilco - Thanks for posting the PR write -up. Do the PR people say which valley ? The Wairau Valley near the mouth of the river has been judged by Bob Campbell as the most pleasurable for the 2011 vintage. This valley runs parallel and more north of the Awatere, and is generally a little warmer A southern area of Malborough, they say ! Well now, a huge territory if we are talking about a 100% single vineyard wine. I don't think much of that PR credential details, nevertheless, I suppose someone took the trouble of typing it up. In the northern hemisphere planting the rows north - south does not maximise the exposure to sun. Both Marlborough valleys run East-West, that is a weird PR write-up - Eh ? Wilco -Thanks for the additional info. It's a big vineyard wherever it is, if it has three different parcels of fruit from two distinct ares, that were blended ? In the context of huge vineyards in OZ and NZ, saying 100% single vineyard is rather meaningless, it's hardy a Burgundy climat Leaving the wine on the lees adds complexity, so it's worth a go. Perhaps Mr G, (Goosegogs) knows something about Eveline Frazer. (Eveline), spelling in NZ, does that indicate a gal or a guy ? More to look-up after I've tried the wine. Cheers for the follow-up |

http://www.laithwaites.co.uk/Still_White_Wine/Insight_Sauvignon_Blanc/prod3044377 Eveline Fraser was head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. She worked on their Pelorus sparkler. The above is a different sb made by her. |

Thanks G , it's good to have proper MSB expertise here I quite like the CB style, not always obviously, but to ring the changes |
