When I buy lager on tap in the pub or in cans I can taste the lager as it's supposed to be and I can easily tell the subtle difference between brands. But when I buy the exact same brands in glass bottles all I can taste is a beery, yeasty flavour.

I can't tell one lager from another.

Anyone else have a problem with bottled beer/lager.

I don't know if cans are more consistent than bottles, but I would agree that kegs are usually spot on. The same can be said with real ale. I don't know why it is, but they say conditioning is faster and more consistent in large volumes.

Also, I believe that bottled beer and kegged/casked beer are often made at different breweries. I know that bottled versions of a lot of popular casked real ale are made by someone else, often to quite different recipes. I'm not sure, but could well be the same with some brands of lager.

I must say, that I very rarely buy "lager", but if I do it's usually MDCLXIV.
When I was in Panamá, I spent some time with a guy who was spearheading a new cigarette factory for BAT. He explained, that with global brands (in this case Marlboro) they had an 80% basic blend, then devised the rest from perceived and trialled local tastes.
I bought mine from the officers club at the airforce base as they came in from the U.S. and the local ones were 'orrid.

Ive got 40 pints of Wherry to bottle tomorrow.

I like Cobra, this does taste different to me, better than the usual lager dross.
