Im off to climb The Ben in August, then cycle around Loch Ness and surrounding area for a week. Camping at Glen Nevis.

Any tips for keeping the dreaded midge away?

Glad I read this post as the wife is walking Hadrians Wall for Charity this Friday for 6 days and is also camping out.

Must check she has insect cream etc !!

Any keen walkers on here ??

My Misses uses anti-hystermine / mixed with repellant [spelling] cream.

For midges, I don't find they bother me - but the large mosquitos are a bloody nuisance. Do you get many up at Ben Nevis ? Normally the mosquitos stay on the foothills - about the same level as you find large quantities of sheep dung. Above the dung, there are none noticeable in Snowdonia.

Ben Nevis is far too much for us. We do the coast west of Studland Bay and The Bill of Portland and stuff around Snowdonia

Was filming a Birds with Bottle picnic vid on Saturday at 07.30 and got midged to pieces. My ankle, which should be on the gas pedal all the way from Stroud to Norway, via Holland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden, tomorrow, is the size of a grapefruit. This is unusual for me. Luckily, had the foresight to have a son, 21 years ago, and he will be sharing the driving.

There's a great little bit in the vid, apparently, where Sandra's husband is in the background, swatting midges like a lunatic. He was there, very kindly, to steer dog walkers around us.

Were you filming up Ben Nevis?

I love this area of our fine country. When the kids are big enough I must return.

I've not climbed The Ben, but have done a number of the walks around the base. Fantastic place. As is the Caledonian Canal. When in my late teens the family hired a boat and we sailed down it over a week. Wonderful memories.

I drove the team van for a pair doing a charity relay from J O'G to Land's End. The idea was to use as many non-mechanical methods as poss. We went down to Fort W with bikes, walking a couple of Munros and skis (which were not needed). We handed the lime green frog baton onto a group who were sea-kayaking the next leg, then roller skates, etc. Camped at Augustus one night - marvelous. Loads of incidents inluding being within inches of the van going over a 100 ft drop. Had to reverse half a mile with cliff one side and drop the other. Very hairy.

Just put up my new tent in the garden, dont want any surprises.

This is an area I have wanted to go to for a long time, Ive stayed around Loch Tay but not this far west, also want to walk the Ben while I still have my health. The girls are off on a road trip of their own for a week visiting friends and family down south, giving me the opportunity to have a little 'me' time. Really looking forward to it.

Go for it, I've done my real stuff - I'm not fit enough now to do The Ben, or the summit at Snowdon, and I don't have any climbing expertise or training. I've done a bit of hairy sailing though, some heavy weather work in my time, but never as stormy as that Fastnet ferocious gale, that had the better of Simon Le Bon's yacht 'Drum'. He was pushing that super yacht so damn hard, that the keel came off in those steep seas !
