Worth a read.

...perhaps global warming and its effects on the UK will see an end to such anecdotes. But I doubt if it will see an end to my big beef: which is that English wine is rarely, if ever, value for money....

The comments section is also worth a look, Gluck continues to divide..

What a stupid article. Gluck completely misses the point. English wine has a future, it's still in it's infancy. It needs encouragement, guidance, not a bitch slap from a superponce.

I am not a fan of Gluck I think he's an inverted wine snob who hates the French and uses the dross that comes out of France as sticks to hit the good stuff. Mind you, British supermarkets do like to help him out by importing a lot of French tat for him ( and me ) to have a pop at.

I agree about English wine though. I would like to give Bacchus a go as it sounds similar to Sancerre but i'm not paying Sancerre prices for it. I would've bought one at Marks the other day but £10.79 is just silly.

I bought their new Sancerre Le Mont pinot rose for an introductory price of £8.99. Ecpensive too I guess but I know how good Loire pinot can be.

I don't know any of Gluck's work or anything about him.

Assuming that his opinion is unedited ? Taking a pop at English wine producers and the prices they have to pay to get a wine to the market is pretty uncharitable in todays climate.

England is the most expensive country in the world to get any sort of production done by people.

His wine opinions do not figure in my interest. I've never been bought any of his publications by friends and family.

So - Time to take a pop at him, to even up the score.

I don't even know if he is qualified by examination. He has 25 years experience they say. I have nearly forty years. Does that qualify me as a reliable authority ? I know how a few wines should taste - That's it.

Does anyone knowledgable trust his opinion ? Excitable media stuff ? Tat and verbal diarrhea ? - Don't know and actually, - don't.........

English wine producers could be cut a bit of slack just now, and this season looks quite good for them at the moment. My buds are the best I've seen for years  I'll leave it to younger wine lovers to find out about Gluck's opinions.

One day, producers might get some government support ! Yeah, just like our car industry and almost everything else to do with production - Duh !
