Richard Often the case at the bottom end of the spectrum. going to be paying 3x or more mark up on surpermarket cheapies Obv, skip those in the Dry White wine section Not really enough info to go on but I'd start passing anything up to the Gavi and take something from there onwards. Segla 1999 for £28 ?!?!?! Gotta be something moody there... can't be Rauzan Segla as that's double the price in the shops so some copycat using a similar name or a misprint on the website |

The Segla is the 2nd wine. Had the 97 and 98 in the last 2/3 years and have both been pretty good. Thanks for the input so far !! |

I did have a look to see if they did a second wine but nothing came up on internet search (altho found a very brief note on wine doctor now) Sure you know that 1999 was far from the best vintage for Bordeaux but ok for top houses. Likely the second wine of a 2nd Growth Bordeaux should be able to stand the test of time... ... and for £28 sounds pretty good as I'd expect it to be no more than a 2x mark up which is a steal on a restaurant wine list [edit] infact: 2002 vintage going for £30 here !! |

Looking at the list, these two seem to suffer less of a Mark -Up than many of the others, and you said that the meal will be centred around fish. Sancerre Les Pierres Blanche £23.00 2007 1 *Savigny-Les-Beaune-Blanc £23.50 2005 2 This white burgundy on the '05 could be good with a Fish main course, for example:- Monk fish Shezza wrote: Segla 1999 for £28 ?!?!?! Gotta be something moody there... can't be Rauzan Segla as that's double the price in the shops so some copycat using a similar name or a misprint on the website Shezz, in France and from some of the cash & carry outfits in the UK, you can buy a generic regional claret made by the Chateau who produce the grand vin and their named 2nd vin. (y'all know this stuff) The generic mix will be fruit that would have been their 2nd wine, which is added to the 2nd's of lesser growths and 3rd's from 1st growth fellow chateau owners whose vineyards have to be within the boundaries of Margaux. These generic mix wines can be good value and very nice in a great vintage year, and rather naff in a poor one. I have some of these on the ripe '03 and the firm and fave '05. There was a half decent Pauillac at Maj for £13 quid recently, it looked like a Reserve de la Comtesse 3rd plus mix, similar label style and gold font design. On the label it could say for a 1999 Syndicate of producers affiliated to Rauzan Segla. recently they've been more discreet with this sort of provenance. And could look like this: Le syndicat de producteurs a affilié à Rauzan Segla More Research is required Richard, if you want to end the meal with this Margaux, and not be disappointed. Or, if you know what generic Margaux should taste like - send it back if it is not up to the marque. Ah - you've done the research - Looks like you're going with it then ? |

The Segla looks excellent value. For the white with main course one of those mentioned by Dunc or perhaps the Moreau Chablis, which is a reasonable price in a restaurant. |
