A quick snack, light lunch or late night bite? What are your old favourites?

One of my all time faves is mushrooms on toast, the mushrooms must be pan fried in butter and sage with a little seasoning. I’m not sure why mushrooms and sage go so perfectly together but they do, trust me, if you haven’t tried it, give it a go. Always use fresh sage and dont be shy.

Wine match? Pinot Noir is often quoted as a good match with mushrooms but I have found Grenache based blends work very well too, like the sweeter St Hallett GKR. An aged white perhaps?

Grilled tomatoes on that brown soda bread that comes ready sliced, with just a little bit too much butter. Flaky salt and crunchy pepper. Glass of water.

Berkswell Ewe on rosemary crackers with pretty much any wine. However, if I were rich, a large glass of Hamilton Russell chardonnay, with a little bottle age.

Foie gras on crunchy baguette toast, with any sweet white wine, but perhaps an SGN GWT.

Ditto Roquefort with PX

I actually have work to do, you know. GK, good question for a Friday evening.

Have you tried making your own soda bread Mel? It looks easy enough.

Never have. Well, have from a kit in Sainsbury's, by adding water.

We were talking about sour dough bread last night. Just don't have the time. I make bread for my wine panel every Wednesday and always if I have people for dinner, but we don't eat enough of it to be able to finish it before it's stale.
