Attended a tasting last week hosted by George Riedel of the Austrian glassware company was to show the differences between varietal specific glassware I have to start by saying that he was a very entertaining MC I went in expecting it to be a fairly stuffy affair but he made it a vey lighthearted evening we had 4 different glasses and a plastic cup thatbwe played with, switching 4 varietals of wine between the 5 vessels the differnt glasses do impact the aroma and delivery of the wine to different areas of the mouth making acidity ot tannin more noticablr depending o. The glass and the wine a very interesting evening and would recommend it to anyone here damage was 60 quid but you walk out with the 4 glasses you used which have an rrp of £100 (obv the evening is just a sales pitch for the riedel glasses but tbh) now I don't condone the these prices for glassware and it well beyond my budget too there are plenty of generic glasses that do as good a job as an allrounder having said this, I'd actually go to this again with friends or family with little wine knowledge as it was very educational and I still think as an evenng out it's worth the money |

An excellent write-up, thanks for that. I won on the lottery AND the pools w/e before last and came away with a total of £17.92. Think I'll stick to cheapo stemware until my boat comes in. |

I have a rather eclectic collection of wine and port glasses, all individual cut glass and crystal, mostly beautiful in design and a pleasure to drink from (in private). I prefer to drink my wine from a decent glass. Snobbery? Perhaps, but all my glasses were liberated from charity shops & house clearence outlets for pennies, you'd be amazed what a keen eye can find if you know what to look for. And when I break one, which is inevitable, I don’t sweat over the cost. I have standard glasses for guests. |

GK, I recall you mentioning in the last discussion about glassware that your eagle eye is trained not just for wine but the stemware too. Very fortunate. I'd say I've become a bit of a glass snob too. Hate drinking from the ccut crystal glasses my parents insist on using for Sunday dinner and don't get me started on those retro 70's/80's small bowled glasses !!! I personally would never fork out for Riedel glasses as they are as fragile as hell along with being expensive as hell. However, there are other brands such as Spiegelau, Schott Zwiesel and Dartington that can be found online for a fair price of around £6 a glass which I'd use for sit down dinners and seem a little sturdier than the Riedel For day to day use and BBQs I have much cheaper alternatives that I'm not concerned about being cannon fodder |
